College Roundup: Progressland area athletes making their mark

Numerous athletes are participating in sports at several colleges this season. And, a few of those have already stood out on the field. Here's a look at what some local athletes are accomplishing.

Swimming and Diving
John Lytle, Clearfield: Lytle had a big week as a member of the Notre Dame swim team recently, as the Fighting Irish captured their third Big East swimming and diving title since 2005. Lytle was a big part of that win, finishing third in the 100 free with a time of 44.34. The time broke his own school record from last season and met the NCAA-B cut standard. He was also a member of the 400 free relay squad that finished second with a time of 2:59.05, which is also a school record and an NCAA B-cut time.

Ryan Sayers, Clearfield: Sayers, a Washington & Jefferson College swimmer, finished fourth in the 3-meter diving event at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Meet recently. He finished with a score of 313.00.

Track and Field
Rebecca Shiner, Clearfield: Shiner, a runner for Westminster College, is a returning letterwinner for the Titans' outdoor track and field team and the returning Presidents' Athletic Conference champ in the 1500-meter run. The outdoor season begins today at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.

Nathan Shadeck, Clearfield: Shadeck, a hurdler for Slippery Rock, recently opened his season with a win in the 400-meter hurdles at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Collegiate Classic. He won with a time of 56.25.

Baseball
Paul Hawkins, Moshannon Valley: Hawkins was recently chosen as one of three captains at Penn State University. Hawkins has pitched in seven games for the Nittany Lions this season. He is 0-2. PSU is 3-8 on the season.

Matt McCamley, Philipsburg-Osceola: McCamley is a freshman outfielder at Lock Haven University.

James Zimmermann, Clearfield: Zimmermann is a freshman second baseman/outfielder on the Lock Haven University team.

A.J. Czap, Philipsburg-Osceola: Czap is a freshman outfielder for Allegany College of Maryland. ACM is 1-3 after four games in North Carolina against Lenoir Community College.

Mike Supko, Philipsburg-Osceola: Supko is a freshman pitcher for the Allegany College of Maryland. ACM is 1-3 after four games in North Carolina against Lenoir Community College.

Ryan Mostyn, Philipsburg-Osceola: Mostyn is a junior infielder at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has started five of the eight games at either second base or shortstop. Mostyn has four hits and four RBIs so far this season. The Crimson Hawks are 6-2 on the season.

Colt Viehdorfer, West Branch: Viehdorfer is a senior pitcher for Allegheny College. The Gators open today with a doubleheader against Wentworth.

Ryan Heeman, Philipsburg-Osceola: Heeman is a sophomore pitcher for California University of Pennsylvania. Heeman recently picked up a victory, going 5+ innings for the Vulcans against West Liberty State recently. Heeman allowed just two earned runs in the contest. The Vulcans are 1-1 on the season.

Jeremy Potter, Philipsburg-Osceola: Potter is a senior third baseman for California University of Pennsylvania. He is a returning letterwinner and starter, and a returning PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) first-teamer. The Vulcans are 1-1 on the season.

Andrew Kirsch, Clearfield: Kirsch is senior at Seton Hill University. The Griffins are 0-8 this season.

Matt Adams, Philipsburg-Osceola: Adams is a sophomore catcher at Slippery Rock University. Adams recently had two hits in a 5-3 victory over Concordia College. He also started off the season with a three-hit, three-RBI performance against Shephard University.

Adam Jury, Clearfield: Jury is a freshman infielder for Slippery Rock University. Jury recently had a double in a loss to two-time defending national champion Tampa.

Scott Hugney, Clearfield: Hugney is a senior first baseman at Slippery Rock University. He recently went 3-for-4 in a victory over Mansfield, including a game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning.

Philip Solley, Curwensville: Solley has seen starts at a variety of positions as a member of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford team. He recently had three hits, including a two-run double in an 11-1 victory over Penn State-Harrisburg.

Bart McGary, Curwensville: McGary has started all four games for Pitt-Bradford at third base. He has seven walks so far this season.

Tony Petulla, Philipsburg-Osceola: Petulla will start at catcher for Penn State-Altoona this season. The Lions' home opener is March 25.

Grady Luzier, West Branch: Luzier is the starting first baseman for Penn State-Altoona. The Lions' home opener is March 25.

Paul Keith, Moshannon Valley: Keith is a starting pitcher for Penn State-Altoona. The Lions' home opener is March 25.

Softball
Brittany Pataky, Clearfield: Pataky is a freshman first baseman for Lock Haven University. She has started in all five games and has two hits, including a double. LHU is 4-1 on the season.

Nikki Collins, Clearfield: Collins is the starting second baseman for Slippery Rock. She had two hits, a double and a triple, during The Rock's season-opening games in Florida.

Dana Johnson, Curwensville: Johnson has started in three games at catcher for Clarion this season.

All former area athletes who play a sanctioned college sport are eligible to be recognized by The Progress for their athletic endeavors in the College Roundup.
