BROCKWAY - Clearfield's Jarrin Campman promised his teammates a District 9 title before the season even started. On Friday at Brockway's Frank Varischetti Field, the senior quarterback made good on that promise, leading the Bisons to a 42-20 victory over St. Marys in the D-9 Class AAA Championship. Campman rushed for 174 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 109 yards and two scores on offense. He added two interceptions and several tackles on defense, while knocking a ball out of a St. Marys receiver's hands in the end zone on a fourth-down play to thwart a Dutch scoring attempt.
"I told the seniors before the season started that I was going to get them the District 9 trophy, and I stuck to my word. I'm just glad I played well for them and the whole team," Campman said. "We played great."
Campman's jaw-dropping performance should completely erase the memories of last season's D-9 semifinal loss to St. Marys where Campman tossed six picks and was held to (-5) yards rushing.
"I think that was in the back of his mind," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "That game bothered him, and he's a competitor. But he just had a whale of a night tonight. He played a phenomenal game. I thought he took the game over."
Jarrin wasn't the only Campman who made big plays for the Bisons, however, as brother Trey turned in the first momentum-changer of the evening. He intercepted Dutch quarterback Greg Simchick at the Bison 6-yard line and returned the ball to the 21, stopping the first St. Marys threat of the night on the game's first possession.
The Bisons were unable to move the ball and punted back to the Dutch, who again entered Clearfield territory.
But Jarrin Campman picked off the next Simchick pass at the Clearfield 27 and then led the first scoring drive of the contest.
He hit receiver Derek Danver for a 25-yard pickup on a second-and-15 play from the Bison 22, then scampered eight yards on the next play where he juked nearly every Dutch defender out of their cleats.
After a 6-yard run by Isiah Morgan, Campman rolled to his left before throwing an off-balance pass the length of the field to a wide-open Brandon Sass. The 44-yard touchdown reception and the first of six Parker Herrington extra points gave Clearfield a 7-0 lead.
"It was a hitch route to the outside," Campman said. "Sass was the inside receiver, and he ran a deep flag to the corner. He got open and I laid it up for him."
"Throwing the ball early helped us spread things out and took some pressure off Jarrin," Janocko said. "We hit some big passes."
St. Marys moved the ball again on its next possession, crossing midfield for the third time in the first quarter. But once again, Simchick threw the ball to the wrong color jersey. This time, Jarrin intercepted it at the Bison 31-yard line and returned it to midfield.
Just three plays later, Campman slashed through a gaping hole at the line of scrimmage and raced 45 yards to paydirt, giving Clearfield a 14-0 lead with 16 seconds left in the first quarter.
"I thought our unbalanced sets really hurt them," Campman said. "I thought that kept their defense off-balance. The cutback lanes were open all night, and I just kept hitting them."
St. Marys responded with an 8-play, 66-yard drive that culminated with a 1-yard Simchick sneak. Mitchell Straub busted off a 39-yard run in the series as St. Marys kept the ball on the ground the entire possession.
But Clearfield came right back with a run-oriented drive of its own. Other than a 23-yard Trey Campman reception, the Bisons worked the ball down the field 71 yards with the run. Jarrin Campman, who had 27 yards rushing on the series, went the final six to give the Bisons a 21-7 lead with 4:05 left in the half.
The Dutch drove the ball all the way to the Bison 4-yard line on their next drive before the Clearfield defense stiffened. The Bisons dropped Kevin Hoy for a 2-yard loss on second-and-goal from the 4 before Derek Morgan sacked Simchick on third-and-goal, dropping the Dutch quarterback for a 7-yard loss.
St. Marys decided to go for the touchdown on fourth down with less than 30 seconds left and looked like it made the right choice as Shane Krise ran free over the middle on a quick slant. But Campman hit Krise, knocking the ball out of his hands and preserving the 14-point Bison lead.
The Flying Dutch rushed for 167 yards in the first half (331 in the game) and had the ball in Clearfield territory on all five, first-half possessions, but had just seven points to show for it.
"Our defense buckled down inside the red zone," Janocko said. "The series at the end of the first half was a big stand. Even though St. Marys got yards, it was methodical. They had to work to get the yards. And credit St. Marys. Their coaches did a great job."
Clearfield got the ball first after the halftime break, but couldn't move it and had to give the ball back to the Dutch, who set up shop at their own 35 after a 43-yard Herrington punt.
Hoy rumbled 48 yards on the next play and Krise scored from six yards out seven plays later, getting St. Marys back in the game at 21-14 with 7:55 left in the third quarter.
Hoy led the Dutch ground game with 129 yards on 20 carries. Krise added 112 yards on 10 totes.
But Clearfield responded to the momentum shift with a 6-play, 60-yard drive that started with a big kick return by Tyler Wilson.
"They just hunkered down," Janocko said. "We got a good kickoff return and then started pounding the ball. As long as we were able to keep moving the ball, we were in good shape."
Campman ran four times for 24 yards in the drive while Isiah Morgan added a 14-yard carry. The final 17 yards came courtesy of the Campman Connection as Jarrin found Trey in the end zone for the score and a 28-14 lead for Clearfield.
Clearfield upped the lead to 35-14 on the first play of the fourth quarter on Jarrin Campman's 1-yard run. The scoring drive covered 53 yards in 10 plays - all runs.
"The way we ran the ball with Isiah and Jarrin was key, especially with Jarrin getting five, six, seven yards a carry," Janocko said. "When you can't stop that, it's pretty tough to get in a scoring race with us. That's something we want. And when you're up three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, that's a good position to be in."
Both teams added scores later in the fourth quarter with Krise going in on a 7-yard sweep for the Dutch and Campman scoring from 12 yards out for the Bisons.
"Everybody contributed to this win, and I told the kids that," Janocko said. "Everybody stepped up and made plays. We knew St. Marys was going to be better than they were last week. St. Marys played very well. It was just a great win for us."
"We just work and work and work every day from the summer on," Campman said. "It's a team effort every game. I'm just glad we did it."
The district title is Clearfield's first since 2005 when it topped St. Marys, 21-18.
"It's big," Janocko said of the title. "There are goals the kids set like a winning season, winning the MAC title and now the District 9 title and going to the state playoffs. They are achieving all their goals, and I'm very happy for them because they're a hard-working bunch of kids."
Clearfield is back in action Friday at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh. The Bisons will face the winner of today's District 8 title game between Brashear and Perry.
