PITTSBURGH - For the fourth time in the last seven years, the Clearfield football team has won a District 9 Class AAA title. And for the fourth time in those seven years, it will face off against the District 8 champ in the PIAA playoffs.
The Bisons tangle with Brashear at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh Friday night, which is the one thing that is different about the matchup, as all three previous meetings against D-8 were against Perry Traditional Academy. Brashear knocked off Perry 26-20 last week, coming back from a 13-0 deficit to secure its second straight City League Championship.
Brashear (10-1) features an offensive line that averages 255 pounds per player and has a pair of Division I prospects in senior twins John and Dave Wetzel. John (6-7, 270) has received offers from Akron University, Eastern Michigan University and Central Michigan University. Dave has interest from Miami (Ohio) University and New Hampshire University.
"They have two good linemen and like to pull and trap with them a lot," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "They also have two good running backs and a quarterback that can run. They have a lot of speed in the backfield - more than we've seen this year."
Tailback Bruce Patterson is the Bulls' leading rusher. He has 1,115 yards and 14 touchdowns on 156 carries this season. His 148 yards in last week's title game was his second-highest total of the season.
Backfield mate James Reed has rushed for 419 yards and seven scores this season. Reed was huge against Perry last week, he had four interceptions and scored all four Bulls touchdowns. One of his scores was an interception return.
"They want to outrun you," Janocko said. "They run a scissors play and pull their tackles, and try to get to the outside."
Brashear quarterback Henri Chatman has added 256 yards and six touchdowns on the ground and has thrown for 1,412 yards and 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions. His favorite target is Manassah Garner, who has 45 receptions for 628 yards and six touchdowns. Garner is also a threat to throw the ball, as he has completed 6 of his 12 pass attempts on the season for 206 yards and two scores.
"They are a real good football team," Janocko said. "We have a pretty good defensive scheme, but we need to tackle better than we did last week. We didn't tackle as well as we had been."
On defense, the Bulls employ a 3-5 defense anchored on the line by the Wetzel Brothers. Garner, Patterson, Dillon Semian and Tariq Taliaferrio are the leading tacklers on the teams and make up the majority of a very sold linebacker core.
"Their defense is reflective of their offense," Janocko said. "They have a lot of speed on both sides of the ball. The linebackers run to the ball real well. But I don't think they've seen an offense like ours. I hope that works to our advantage."
Clearfield's last playoff win beyond districts was in 2002. The Bisons downed Indian Valley that season before falling to Perry the following week.
"This group wants to play as long as they can," Janocko said. "They're having fun in practice and working real hard. That's all I can ask for."
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
