Friday, December 12, 2008
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
With the winter season upon us, there are a number of local athletes participating at colleges across the state. Here's a glance at what some of those individuals are doing.

Wrestling

Brad Pataky, Penn State: Pataky won five-straight matches on Sunday to finish fifth at the Penn State Open on Saturday after getting pinned by Navy's Preston Garner, who eventually won the 125-pound title.

Pataky picked up a 4-0 decision before getting pinned, but responded to pick up a pair of falls and a technical fall en route to his finish.

The former Clearfield standout is currently 12-4 on the season.

Matt Kyler, Army: Kyler finished seventh at the 27th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational over the weekend after posting a 4-2 in the event.

The former Bison picked up a pair of wins over Big 10 wrestlers in Michigan's Mark Weber (6-1) and Illinois' Troy Tirapelle (pin in 2:35), before falling to fourth-ranked Lance Palmer (Ohio State), 5-2.

After defeating Arizona State's Vicent Varela, 6-0, Kyler dropped a 7-4 match to Purdue's Jake Patacsil to fall to the seventh-place bout, where he decked Virginia Tech's Peter Yates in 3:04.

Kyler is now 15-4 this season.

Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane began the season as the nation's No. 1 ranked wrestler in Division II, but the former Clearfield grappler dropped his second match of the season to Rutgers' Matt Pietcher, 4-0.

Pitt-Johnstown is back in action Dec. 20 at Clarion.

Tommy Barger, Lycoming: Barger earned an 11-8 winner at 141-pounds for Lycoming in its 24-15 loss at the State University of New York-Brockport. The Clearfield alum defeated Josh Bellinger, 11-8, to improve to 3-2. Lycoming travels to the Ohio Northern Tournament on Saturday.

Derek Caldwell, Lock Haven: Caldwell went 2-2 in the Penn State Open over the weekend. The Golden Tide alum alternated wins and losses, as he defeated George Mason's Andrew Rock, 9-5, before dropping a 6-2 decision to Maryland's Corey Peltier.

Caldwell bounced back from the loss with a 9-7 victory over Navy's Mike Billings, but was bounced from the tournament with a 3-1 defeat to Lehigh's Robert Hamlin.

Lock Haven hosts the Lock Haven Duals on Sunday.

Football

Andrew Janocko, Pittsburgh: Janocko and the rest of the Panther football team earned a spot in the Sun Bowl, where they'll face Oregon State on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas, with a decisive 34-10 win over Connecticut on Saturday.

Janocko, a redshirt freshman, held for a pair of field goals and four extra points.

Swimming and Diving

John Lytle, Notre Dame: Lytle and his Notre Dame teammates competed in the Ohio State Invitational last weekend, where the former Bison standout competed in three individual events and a pair of relays.

Lytle posted his season-low times in two individual events, as he was sixth in the 100 free (44.78) and 14th in the 50 free (20.82). The Clearfield alum was also 18th in the 200 free (1:40.58).

The Fighting Irish finished fourth in the Invitational.

Brandon Good, Lycoming: The Lycoming senior turned in his best time in the 100 free last week at the College of Wooster Invitational. Good touched the wall in 52.45 in the three-day event. The Warriors return to action on Jan. 14 at a tri-meet in Wilkes-Barre against FDU-Florham and King's.

Bodle finished with a season-best in the 100 fly, as he touched the wall in 59.58, after bettering his time in the 1,650 free (19:34.14). The former Bison swimmer was also 20th in the 200 fly (2:17.8), and was a member of the Titans' 400 medley relay team that finished third.

Chris Bodle, Westminster: Bodle finished in 29th in the 1,650 free, as Westminster finished third at the College of Wooster Invitational last weekend. Bodle completed the race in 18:37.90, and was 11th in the 400 medley to go along with a 27th place finish in the 200 back.
