HYDE - Until a team's first game or match, a coach is never quite sure what their squad is made of. For Clearfield swimming and diving coach Jackie Morrison, the Clearfield Invite on Saturday at the Robert L. Shearer Natatorium against Bellefonte and Dover was the perfect gauge.
The Bisons won the three-team event and won five of the 11 events, while the Lady Bisons finished second behind Dover, despite winning just once.
"I didn't know what to expect, really," said Morrison. "The usual suspects, who I thought were going to have a great day, did, so we had a good meet. ... We couldn't tell what we had until we had a meet"
"Those were the two perfect schools to start out with. One who is extremely close to our abilities, and one who has AAA state-caliber swimmers. They really brought out the best in us today. If we hadn't been swimming against those folks, I don't think we would've seen what I needed to and I don't think those kids would've produced what they did."
Clearfield seniors Shay Flanagan and Mark Krchnak picked up a pair of individual wins apiece, while Connor Shirey, Kraig Peterson, Brady Mulhollem and Justin DeCasper teamed to take the 400-yard free relay.
Marisa Howell (100 free) was the lone Lady Bison winner on the day, while teammate Branda Smeltzer picked up a pair of second-place finishes.
The Bisons outdistanced Dover, 201-182, while the Red Raiders finished with 102. The Lady Bisons (164) and Bellefonte (125) were well behind Dover (202), which won 10 events.
"The usual suspects who usually come through, did," Morrison said, "and there were definitely some surprises on a positive note, but there are some glaring areas where we need to work on.
"I think it's a wake-up call for some of the girls. If those two (Howell and Smeltzer) ever have a situation where they can't swim for us, we're in trouble. ... Those two are providing a cushion for the girls that really need to step it up."
Flanagan and Krchnak, both state qualifiers a season ago, easily won their races by at least five seconds.
Flanagan won the 200 free in 1:53.19 - Dover's Karl Mallorey touched the wall in 1:58.69 - and the 500 free in 5:12.66. Mallorey was second behind Flanagan again in the 500, finishing in 5:18.05.
Krchnak's performance was just as strong, if not stronger, as he won both the 200 IM and the 100 breast in convincing fashion.
Dover's Andy Woods was runner-up to Krchnak in the IM, as he touched the wall in just under nine seconds after the Bison senior. Woods also finished behind Krchnak in the breast, with the Clearfield swimmer finishing in 1:01.92 to his 1:08.48.
"I'm pretty happy Hoss (Krchnak) had a great meet," said Morrison. "He definitely sent a statement to the rest of the state.
"That's definitely a shout out to everybody, ‘hey, get on the Internet and find my time. I'm here, so bring me whatever you got.' I think he definitely sent a strong message today."
Also sending a strong message was Dover's Eric Naylor, who broke a pair of pool records held by three-time state champion John Lytle.
Naylor barely bested Lytle's time in the 100 fly, as he ended the race in 52.03, which was three-one hundredths quicker than the current Notre Dame standout.
The Dover senior proved it wasn't a fluke in the 100 back, however, as he shattered Lytle's mark of 53.83 with a time of 52.60.
"That's saying something when you break one of those records," Morrison said. "If you can break a Lytle record, then you're definitely somebody in my eyes."
Howell broke Dover's streak on the girls' side by winning the 100 free in the day's most competitive contest.
Howell finished 62-hundredths ahead of Bellefonte's Arwen Rockey, who was just ahead of a pair of Dover swimmers by a total of 1.34 seconds.
The Clearfield senior was also second in the 100 back, while Smeltzer was second in the 200 free and 500 free.
"There were some bright spots," Morrison said, "and I think the rest of them are going to catch on and follow. ... The girls need a meet to realize they need to work harder in practice. ... They don't tend to get the light bulb to turn on until a meet."
Jordan Mumma (50 free, 100 free) was the only other swimmer to earn a second-place finish for either Clearfield squad, which returns to action today at Altoona.
