Lady Bisons fall to BEA; Mo Valley defeated by Jersey Shore
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
WINGATE - A year after going 0-2 at the Bald Eagle Area Holiday Tournament, the Clearfield girls basketball team had a chance Monday to capture the tournament title.
Unfortunately for the Lady Bisons, the hosts came up with a big quarter to establish a lead just as they did in an opening round win over Moshannon Valley.

The Lady Eagles outscored Clearfield 18-3 in the second period and cruised from there for a 67-46 win on Monday night in Wingate.

"The second quarter doomed us," said Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo. "The kids got down a little bit after missing a couple of shots, and it just steamrolled from there."

While the second quarter got out of hand for the Lady Bisons, the first quarter went in their favor.

Bald Eagle Area pulled within a point at 8-7 with 3:32 left in the period, when it began to use full-court pressure.

Clearfield broke any pressure the Lady Eagles threw at it with ease, and Amber Byerly was the beneficiary with three easy layups on consecutive trips down the floor.

Byerly was the lone Lady Bison in double figures, netting 11 points - eight of which came in the final 3:37 of the first quarter.

"We want teams to press us because that gets us moving," Castagnolo said. "It played right into our hands (but) their coach was smart enough to get out of it because it wasn't working.

"Gwenn (Porter) did a good job of getting the ball up the court, and we eventually found Amber right under the basket wide open. Amber did a good job for us all night off the bench."

After seeing the Lady Bisons take a 14-7 lead, Bald Eagle dropped back into its half-court defense and began to make its move.

Brittany Butterworth canned a three-pointer to cut the deficit in half heading into the second, and the Bald Eagle defense held Clearfield to its worst shooting quarter of the tournament.

The Lady Bisons finished the second just 1-of-14 from the field, while the Lady Eagles drained 7 of 15 shots to take a 28-17 lead into halftime.

Bald Eagle kept the pressure on from there, thanks mostly to the play of tournament MVP Amelie DeGueldre.

DeGueldre was held to just four points in the first half, but came on strong down the stretch by scoring 18 of her game-high 22 in the final two periods of play.

"She just started taking it to the hoop," said Castagnolo of DeGueldre. "She's a Belgian exchange student who came here as a senior, and she's a pretty nice player. They just attacked our zone with penetration, and we were flat-footed. That's a District 6 team attacking us, and it's a little different from what we're used to seeing in District 9."

Even though they trailed by 19 heading into the final eight minutes, the Lady Bisons showed some mettle by narrowing the deficit to 11 by beginning the period on a 10-2 run.

Sarah Kovalick had a big fourth quarter for Clearfield by scoring five of the 10 points during the run, but Bald Eagle dashed the bid for a comeback with a run of its own.

The Lady Eagles ended the game by scoring 15 of the final 20 points.

Annie Janocko was the lone Lady Bison selected to the all-tournament team.

"We got it down to 11 and we didn't quit," Castagnolo said. "I told the girls we might have grown up a little bit here. The teams took it to us and we gave it right back to them. I'm not really disappointed ... we lost to a pretty good team tonight."

Clearfield (3-3) returns to action Monday when it hosts Philipsburg-Osceola.

The Lady Bisons dropped the consolation game in the junior varsity tournament, as they fell 25-24 to Mo Valley. Julia Ammerman led Clearfield with eight points in the loss.

Jersey Shore 54,

Moshannon Valley 52

The end of the consolation game mirrored that of an NCAA March Madness game from 1995, when UCLA's Tyus Edney drove the length of the court and hit a layup as the buzzer sounded, giving the Bruins a dramatic 75-74 win over Missouri.

Unfortunately for the Damsels, they were on the wrong end of the buzzer-beating layup.

Mo Valley rallied from a 13-point, fourth-quarter deficit to be in it at the end, but Jersey Shore's Tanya Siford made it all for naught with the game-winner as time expired.

"I'm hoping the technical I got inspired them," said Damsels coach Aaron Mills, who received the technical late in the third quarter. "I think they saw the referees weren't going to help us out, so we had to take control ourselves. We just started chipping away and things started going our way - we got (Julie) Stevenson to foul out, we played better defense.

"Unfortunately at the end, we just fell short. If we would have hit more foul shots and turned the ball over less, then it would've been our game."

The comeback featured all seven of the Mo Valley players who dressed in the game, as foul trouble plagued both teams.

Vanessa Rowley began the rally by draining a pair of foul shots before fouling out with 43 seconds remaining, and Kierstin Elder had a hot hand by connecting on three of her five three-pointers in the final stanza, including one that tied the game at 52 with 14 seconds to go.

The Damsels trailed by five after Siford made one of two foul shots on the whistle that ended Rowley's game, but the Mo Valley junior's replacement made a splash the next trip down the court.

Sophomore Chelsea Neff, who has seen action in just three varsity games in her short career, put up a three-point attempt only to be fouled in the process.

Neff calmly made all three to bring her team to within a pair.

"You can't say enough about what Chelsea Neff did tonight, especially for a sophomore who hasn't seen a lot of time," Mills said. "She was fresh off the bench, and I can't imagine what her nerves were like at the foul line. For her to hit those three foul shots, that was so huge."

Maria Charney, who replaced Taylor Murarik after she fouled out, also came up big for Mo Valley, and nearly gave her team the lead.

Charney came up with a steal and made one of two foul shots to make it a one-point game, and then stole the inbounds pass after Elder's three knotted the score.

Charney was again fouled, but couldn't get either shot to fall.

"Maria did a fantastic job all night long," said Mills. "Defensively, she got those two big steals at the end of the game, causing some jump balls, and did a good job of getting to the foul line. I couldn't be more proud of her."

The Lady Bulldogs were awarded possession after a jump-ball was called on the rebound of the second attempt, and Siford ended it in dramatic fashion from there.

Shannon Greslick was Mo Valley's representative on the all-tournament team after netting 13 points, pulling down six rebounds and coming up with five steals.

Jersey Shore was represented by Stevenson, who finished with 15 points before fouling out with 3:18 to go.

The Damsels led by a point at halftime, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to knock down some shots from long distance to open up the double-digit lead.

"Their guards hit some shots and that's what we wanted to make them do," Mills said. "We didn't see any consistent shooters, so we took our chances. They hit a few shots, but we could have won the game easily if we would have taken better care of the ball and played more aggressive in the first half."

Mo Valley (2-4) is back in action Friday when it entertains rival Glendale.
