Campus Roundup: Area athletes starting off New Year right

A number of former local athletes are still competing in their winter seasons, while others just beginning the winter season. Here's a look at what some of those individuals are accomplishing.

Wrestling

Brad Pataky, Penn State: Pataky grabbed a pair of victories on Sunday as Penn State split dual meets with No. 9 Lehigh and Lock Haven. Pataky won by injury default over Lock Haven's Nick Hyatt at 2:32 to help the Nittany Lions to a 36-3 victory. He led 5-0 before the injury.

Pataky scored a 15-1 major decision over Lehigh's John McDonald, but Penn State fell, 17-16, in the dual.

Pataky is 15-4 on the season with an eight-bout winning streak. He is 7-1 in dual meets and has scored 32 points for the team, while only surrendering three.

Matt Kyler, Army: Kyler began the new year ranked No. 9 at 149 by Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling Insider Magazine and No. 13 in the USA Today/InterMat/National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings. In his first action of 2009, Kyler recorded three falls and a decision at the Lone Star Duals in the South Prairie High School Coliseum Saturday.

Kyler pinned Appalachian State's Chip Powell in 1:21, Minnesota's Brian Peterson in 3:38 and Stanford's Max Rosefigura in 1:50 then topped North Carolina's Thomas Scotton 5-1. He wrestled 149 in the first three duals and moved up to 157 against Scotton.

Army defeated Appalachian State (29-10) and Stanford (31-13), but fell to seventh-ranked Minnesota (26-15) and North Carolina (23-12).

Kyler has an overall record of 19-4 and is undefeated in dual meets at 9-0.

Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane went 5-2 in the 76th Wilkes University Open last Saturday. The top-ranked 165-pounder in the NCAA Div. II East Region placed fourth in the tournament after suffering a 6-4 setback to Columbia's Eren Civian.

Keane did not wrestle in UPJ's 23-13 win over Kutztown Monday night.

Tom Barger, Lycoming: Barger is 7-5 on the season after going 1-1 in the annual Pennsylvania/New York duals at Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday. Barger, wrestling at 141 pounds, lost an 8-2 decision to SUNY-Oswego's Derrick Smith and won a 9-8 decision over RIT's Adam Hugunine

Lycoming won both dual meets to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Mike Horton, Edinboro: Horton is 4-3 with a fall, wrestling at heavyweight for the Scots.

  

Swimming and Diving

John Lytle, Notre Dame: After helping his team finish fourth at the Ohio State Invitational in early December, the former Bison is now spending the New Year in Puerto Rico as the Fighting Irish hit the island for a winter training session from Dec. 30 through Jan. 8. Lytle and Notre Dame will be back in action at Louisville on Saturday.

Brandon Good, Lycoming: Good swam a season-best 52.45 in the 100 freestyle at the College of Wooster Invitational from Dec. 4-6. After undergoing winter training in Islamorada in the Florida Keys, the Warriors will take on Kings and Farleigh Dickinson-Florham in Wilkes-Barre on Jan. 14.

John Bodle, Westminster: The former Bison swam a 59.58 in the 100 fly to help his team finish third overall at the Wooster Invitational, while also swimming a 19:34.14 in the 1650 freestyle. Swimming in the finals of the 200 fly, Bodle finished 20th with a time of 2:17.80 and the sophomore's 400 medley relay squad came in third.

Chris Bodle, Westminster: The sophomore swam a 4:41.56 for 11th place in the 400 IM in the Wooster Invitational. In the 1650 free, Bodle legged out a 18:37.90, and the sophomore just missed out on the finals in the 200 backstroke after swimming a prelim time of 2:11.76. The Titans will be back in action today, traveling to Florida for a tri-meet at Rollins.

Ryan Sayers, Washington & Jefferson: Sayers hit the pool at the Longnecker Invitational at Grove City College on Dec. 5-6, where he finished fifth in the 3-meter dive with a finals score 174.70. he also jumped in the 1-meter event, notching a 136.50 for seventh place. The Presidents will be back in the pool at Bethany on Jan. 14.

Men's Basketball

Todd Hryn, Pitt-Greensburg: Hryn put together 11 points and six rebounds in the Bobcats 88-71 loss to Oglethorpe on Dec. 20. The former Bison is averaging 4.1 points and 2.1 rebounds off the bench for 3-8 Pitt-Greensburg, which will be back on the court on Saturday hosting Medaille.

Women's Basketball

Michelle Peoples, Mount Aloysius: Peoples has played in two games for the 0-8 Lady Mounties, who will be back in action tonight at Shenandoah.
