Clearfield girls defeat District 9 League rival DuBois

By Chris Wechtenhiser For The Progress
HYDE - Coming off a tough home loss to Philipsburg-Osceola Monday, the Clearfield girls basketball team used an all-around team effort on Friday night to upend District 9 League rival DuBois, 59-50, to even its record on the season.

Clearfield used a strong inside game to stay even with the Lady Beavers in the first half, leading 23-22 at the break. After pounding the ball inside the first two quarters, Clearfield went to its outside game in the second half as the Lady Bisons hit five of their six 3-pointers to help build their largest lead of the night (49-35) with five minutes left to play.

The Lady Bisons didn't make a field goal after Gwenn Porter drained a trey at the five-minute mark in the fourth quarter. However, Clearfield knocked down 10 of 14 free throws in the final three minutes to hold off the Lady Beavers, who got within five points at 53-48 with 1:19 to play. DuBois actually outscored the Lady Bisons 15-10 down the stretch but couldn't overcome the big lead Clearfield built early in the fourth.

Annie Janocko led the Clearfield attack with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Jayme Ryan and Porter each scored 10 points with both hitting two 3-pointers. Amber Byerly chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bisons, while Elizabeth Peters and Madison Sopic both had six points.

"I'm very happy with how we played tonight," said Clearfield coach Joey Castagnolo. "It was a tough District 9 League game and I think the intensity of it caused us to have some turnovers. I was pleased with how they kept their poise when DuBois got it to five points (in the fourth).

"Annie and Jayme both had nice games, and all the kids really played well. In the first half we pounded it inside, and that opened up the outside shot in the second half. Then we hit our free throws down the stretch after only making 3 of 10 in the first half."

The game opened as a back-and-forth contest with the teams trading baskets. With the score tied 8-8 around the two-minute mark of the first quarter, Janocko scored five quick points on a jump-shot and 3-pointer sandwiched around a DuBois foul to give the Lady Bisons a 13-8 lead. Janocko scored seven of her 14 points in the opening fame.

Byerly added two baskets to close out the period as Clearfield led 17-10.

DuBois controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Bisons 12-6 to pull within a point at the break, 23-22. Sopic scored both Clearfield baskets in the quarter, while Ryan hit two free throws.

Carly Wallock scored five of her 13 points in the period, including a jumper in the final seconds of the half to send the Lady Beavers into the locker room on a high.

The Lady Beavers carried that momentum into the third quarter and grabbed a 30-27 lead on a 3-pointer by Kirsten Wilcox, who scored a game-high 15 points. The lead was DuBois' last of the game as Clearfield ended the third quarter on a 13-2 run to grab a 40-32 lead.

Ryan hit two treys during the Lady Bisons' run, while Porter banked in a three from the right wing at the third-period buzzer to give Clearfield an eight-point lead.

Clearfield continued its run into the fourth quarter as Sarah Kovalick and Porter each hit threes with Porter's second trey of the game giving Clearfield its largest lead at 49-35. Porter's 3-pointer also capped a 22-5 Lady Bisons spurt that took them from three points down to 14 points up.

DuBois slowly chipped away at the Clearfield lead after Porter's 3-pointer and got to within five points at 53-48, but the Lady Bisons ended any DuBois comeback hopes by hitting their free throws down the stretch.

Porter was 4-of-6 from the line in the last three minutes, and Janocko hit three of four. Kovalick made both her free throws, while Jocelyn Schultz hit one of two.

DuBois won the jayvee game, 38-20. Lisa Ambuski led the Lady Bisons with six points.

Clearfield (4-4) travels to Elk County Catholic on Tuesday.
