Clearfield swim teams split with visiting DuBois

HYDE - The winter season is just over one month old, and the Clearfield swimming and diving team has only had one meet with the second taking place on Monday night at the Robert L. Shearer Natatorium in Hyde. With only one meet under her belt, Clearfield coach Jackie Morrison was forced to swim the boys in their best events against DuBois, which resulted in a 121-60 win.
The Lady Bisons, on the other hand, presented a more problematic situation for Morrison.
Even though Morrison had trouble figuring out a lineup, the girls team was in it until the very end before the Lady Beavers claimed the 400 free relay, the meet's final event, to seal a 98-88 win.
"I was just glad to have a meet," said Morrison. "We needed one. I really didn't know where to put people, especially on the girls' side. I knew more about them than us. I know the lineup they have, and I didn't know where to put anybody, but we did the best we could.
"It still looks like there's a conditioning component there because, once we got down to the free relays, we just ran out of gas. It always happens like that and I can't explain it ... I don't know if it's truly physical or if it's in their head."
Despite losing the meet, the Lady Bisons had several bright spots.
Seniors Marisa Howell (200 IM, 100 fly) and Branda Smeltzer (100 free, 100 breast) each won a pair of events, while Brandie Centi added a win in the 50 free. Kaylee Bowser teamed with the trio to win the 200 free relay, which helped bring Clearfield to within striking distance heading into the last event.
"Again, it was the Branda and Marisa Show," said Morrison. "Marisa just wants it and Branda is my little iron woman. Branda did something most swimmers can't do, or won't do, and you don't ask every swimmer to do it ... we asked Branda to do four back-half strokes tonight. She started her night at the 100 freestyle, and she swam four of the last six events. That's a lot to ask, and that truly is a triathlon-type of meet."
The Lady Beavers ended the meet like they started it, however, and that was with a strong performance. DuBois' quartet cruised to a 10-second win to set the final.
"The girls had to get first and third to win it, and we just couldn't pull that off," Morrison said. "At least we were up on the block, in a position to win it. That's all I can ask for from this particular girls team the rest of the way out. I think what hurt the girls tonight was year-around conditioning. DuBois is now into a year-around program - we're not - and it showed up."
The Bisons also had several individuals claim multiple events, and nearly broke a pool record in the process.
Clearfield senior Mark Krchnak posted a fast 50 yards in the 100 breast, but couldn't quite reach the pool record and missed out by seven-hundredths of a second.
Krchnak won the event easily to go along with the 200 IM, while teammates Shay Flanagan (200 free, 500 free), Jordan Mumma (50 free, 100 free) and Kraig Peterson (100 fly, 100 back) also won multiple events.
"(Mark) had a super-bad third turn in the breaststroke, and that cost him. That would've been the record," said Morrison.
"We swam the boys in their strong events just because we haven't been able to. We haven't done anything. Do you always want to do that against teams that aren't quite as strong? No, but I think their coach understood that we just haven't had a meet. We had to put them in their strong events."
The Bisons won both of the relays they scored in, as Flanagan, Krchnak and Mumma teamed with Connor Shirey in the 200 medley relay. Shirey was joined by Peterson, Brady Mulhollem and Justin DeCasper on the 200 free relay team that brought home first place.
Steven Williams won the boy's 1-meter diving competition handily, outscoring teammate Jason Maines, 210.90-127.45.
Despite the easy win, Morrison was satisfied with how her boys performed.
"They're going to run into some competition, and DuBois had some good first-string swimmers," said Morrison. "It wasn't a blowout ... they just didn't have the numbers. They were definitely competitive.
"We have to do some moving around for certain teams, and other teams we'll swim as strong as we can. We'll do what we have to do with the boys."
The Bisons are now 2-0, while the girls dipped to 1-1.
Clearfield is back in action Thursday at Brookville.
