Campus roundup: Area athletes continue to shine at collegiate level
Saturday, January 17, 2009
By Jon Christoff and Rich Murawski Sports Writers
Several area collegiate athletes continue to shine on the mat, in the pool and on the hardwood. Here's a look at what some of those individuals are accomplishing:

Wrestling

Brad Pataky, Penn State: The 125-pounder improved to 19-5 on the season last weekend, going 4-1 in the two-day, 2009 National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division I Duals in the UNI Dome on the campus of Northern Iowa at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Pataky topped Missouri's Troy Dolan, 13-9, to help the 14th-ranked Nittany Lions down No. 5 Missouri, 20-19. It was the Tigers' first loss in 12 matches. The redshirt freshman went on to catch Nebraska's Andy Pokurny in a cement-mixer and pin the Cornhusker in 12 seconds. But Nebraska beat the Nittany Lions, 20-16.

In the first round of consolations, Pataky upset 11th-ranked Mike Watts, 7-5, to key Penn State's 21-18 win over No. 17 Michigan. Pataky suffered his only setback of the weekend in the next round, losing by fall to Minnesota's Zach Sanders, who is ranked eighth. The Golden Gophers won the match, 21-18.

In the seventh-place match against No. 16 Boise State, Pataky finished off a successful weekend by pinning 18th-ranked Brian Owen with the cement mixer in 3:48. The Broncos topped the Nittany Lions, 22-15, dropping Penn State to 7-6 on the season.

Penn State is back in action Jan. 23 at Indiana.

Matt Kyler, Army: Kyler won all three of his bouts last Saturday at Rutgers to help Army go 2-1 in the Rutgers Dual Meet. He picked up pins over Boston's Mike Roberts (4:53) and Rutgers' David Greenwald (1:28), before defeating King's Point's Dan Twitto, 11-4, to improve his record to 22-4 this season, including a 12-0 tally in dual meets. He upped his fall mark to 11 this season.

Army defeated Boston University, 28-15, before falling to the Scarlet Knights, 20-18. The Black Knights bounced back with a 31-9 victory over King's Point to improve their dual meet record to 7-4-1 this winter.

Kyler is ranked No. 8 by Wrestling Insider Magazine, No. 9 by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 12 by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine/InterMat/National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane was 2-1 for No. 11-ranked Pitt-Johnstown at the 2009 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Division II Duals last Saturday and Sunday at the University of Northern Iowa.

Keane, wrestling at 165, scored a 6-4 decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Taylor May and won a 7-2 decision against Wisconsin-Parkside's Corey Van Groll. Top-ranked Keane was upset 5-4 by Central Oklahoma's Mikey Morgan.

UPJ grabbed a 27-13 victory over No. 10 Wisconsin-Parkside but fell to both No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 5 Central Oklahoma on criteria.

Keane, a redshirt junior, is 14-6 overall.

Tom Barger, Lycoming: The sophomore 141-pounder went 4-1 last Friday and Saturday to help host Lycoming finish sixth in the 21st annual Budd Whitehill Duals.

The 25th-ranked Warriors defeated Springfield 18-13, King's 27-13 and No. 27 Messiah 23-11. Lycoming dropped matches to No. 16 Wilkes and to John Carroll, 25-7, in the fifth-place match.

Barger collected wins over Springfield's Ryan McGilvray (7-2), Wilkes' Anthony Dattolo (10-8), King's Tony Miele (8-1) and Messiah's Alex DeHart (10-2). He lost 9-6 to John Carroll's Chris Romeo.

Barger is 11-6 on the season at Lycoming.

Swimming

John Lytle, Notre Dame: Lytle was a member of a winning relay team and added two places in individual events in Notre Dame's loss to 16th-ranked Louisville. Lytle led things off with a 46.94 split in the 200 free relay, which the Irish won in 1:40.58.

Lytle was also second in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 free for Notre Dame (3-4 overall, 1-1 in Big East competition).

Chris Bodle, Westminster: Bodle helped lift Westminster to a 146-108 win over Rollins on Jan. 7. The former Clearfield swimmer posted a personal best in the 1,000 free, as he touched the wall in 11:15.72.

The Titans, who have won four of five meets, host Mount Union today.

Brandon Good, Lycoming: Lycoming defeated King's College and FDU-Florham during a tri-meet on Wednesday night in Wilkes-Barre. Good was a key to the Warriors' sweep, as he claimed the 50 free in 24.28 seconds. Lycoming (4-3) is back in action at Lebanon Valley today.

Brandon Boyer, Clarion: The Golden Eagles will host a tri-meet with Edinboro and Gannon today. The meet will be Clarion's first action since Dec. 5-7.

Men's Basketball

Todd Hryn, Pitt-Greensburg: Pitt-Greensburg responded from a loss to Medaille last weekend to defeat Hillbert College, 80-70, on Wednesday night, and the Clearfield graduate played a big role in the Bobcat win.

Hryn scored a season-high 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.

The Bobcat freshman also scored six points in the 83-72 loss last Saturday. The former Bison standout was crucial in helping Pitt-Greensburg rally from a 10-point deficit in the first half. Hryn made one of two foul shots, knocked down a 3-pointer and turned an offensive rebound into a bucket, but the Bobcats (4-9) still fell.

Football

Gary Walstrom Jr., Valley Forge: Walstrom Jr., a sophomore inside linebacker, was recently named to the Seaboard Conference Second Team Defense. Valley Forge finished the season with a 4-3 record.
