Clearfield overcomes slow third quarter to defeat Punxsutawney
Thursday, January 22, 2009
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
HYDE - The Clearfield girls basketball team built up a four-point halftime lead after shooting nearly 50-percent from the floor, but struggled in the second half to get any offense going against Punxsutawney.

In fact, the Lady Bisons didn't hit a field goal and only had one point to show for their efforts in the third quarter.

That is until a turnover with just under three seconds to play gave Clearfield the ball around the mid-court line. Gwenn Porter inbounded the ball to Annie Janocko, who knocked down a three-pointer to jumpstart a fading Lady Bison offense and give her team a one-point lead.

Janocko's bucket gained momentum that Clearfield carried into the fourth, as it pulled away from the Lady Chucks and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 34-27 win on Wednesday night.

The win was also Clearfield's first at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium against the Lady Chucks in eight tries.

"I thought we had timely three's that really made the difference," said Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo, whose team was 6-of-13 behind the arc. "We only had one point in the third quarter (until Annie's). We knew what we had to do there. It really gave our team a lift."

The Lady Bisons finished 1-of-6 in the third period, only making Janocko's three, but the shot gave Clearfield momentum as it made its first five shots of the fourth to take a 29-23 lead.

Janocko and Sarah Kovalick made three-pointers during that span, while Madison Sopic and Porter each made field goals for the Lady Bisons, who ended the game by scoring 15 of the final 21 points scored.

"I thought that made a big difference in tonight's game," Castagnolo said of the three-point shooting.

"I really do. Jayme (Ryan) hit one, Annie took her time on her three. I bet we didn't shoot that many three's. We're being more particular instead of just being gung-ho and firing them up."

During Clearfield's slow third quarter, the Lady Chucks were unable to put the Lady Bisons away after rallying from the four-point deficit.

Punxsutawney finished just 3-of-12 in the period from the floor and finished the second half 5-of-25.

"I thought our defense played really well," said Castagnolo. "I thought we controlled the boards there in the fourth quarter, too. They got some long rebounds late, but out rebounding was much better tonight.

"They played us well defensively, we were just a little bit more particular with our three's and we made them."

The Lady Bisons began the game by scoring the first five points, only to see the Lady Chucks' Jenna Reitz make back-to-back three-pointers to give her team a one-point advantage.

Janocko made her first bucket of the night before Punxsy ended the quarter by scoring the last four points to take a 10-7 lead into the second.

The Lady Bisons had arguably their most complete quarter in the second, as they made four of the nine shots they attempted, took care of the basketball and limited Punxsy to 1-of-9 shooting en route to an 18-14 lead at halftime.

"We really needed this win in a lot of ways," Castagnolo said. "Right now we're happy, and we got over that psychological hump of blowing another game."

Clearfield improved to 5-8 on the season and 3-4 in the District 9 league, while Punxsy fell to 5-10 and 3-4.

The Lady Bisons are back in action Friday when they travel to face another D-9 League foe in Bradford.

The Lady Chucks won the jayvee game, 25-17. Rachel Thompson scored six points in the loss for Clearfield.
