Campus Roundup: Former Bison wrestler Pataky gets big win

Even with the cold winter months in full effect, several former local athletes are heating things up on the court, on the mat or in the pool. Here's a look at what some of those individuals are doing. Wrestling
Brad Pataky, Penn State: The former Bison standout came up with two big wins recently, including a 4-3 decision over the reigning national champion at 125, Angel Escobedo.
The victory helped the Nittany Lions to a 17-17 tie at No. 21 Indiana on Friday. Returning to the mats on Saturday, Pataky picked up an 8-0 major decision over Purdue's Akif Eren, as Penn State finished in a 19-19 draw with the No. 25 Boilermakers.
The Nittany Lions are now ranked No. 16 in the team rankings, while Pataky holds the No. 17 spot at 125.
Matt Kyler, Army: A junior, Kyler (149 pounds) picked up two wins en route to victories over Brown and Cornell on Saturday. Improving to 30-4 on the season, the former Bison leveled Brown's Dave Foxen 16-1 in 5:20 before picking up an 11-0 major decision over Harvard's Walter Peppleman.
Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Keane was defeated by Newberry's Brandon Kelly on Friday, dropping an 11-8 decision as the Mountain Cats fell 22-8. UPJ bounced back, however, to go 3-1 in Friday and Saturday's East Coast Duals.
The Clearfield graduate was ranked No. 4 at 165 in Division II entering the weekend.
Tommy Barger, Lycoming: Barger (144) registered the Warriors' only win in a 29-12 victory over Gettysburg on Jan. 21, pinning Jack Bostrom in 1:44.
Lycoming moved to 12-6 on the season and is ranked No. 24 in the Division III team polls.
Swimming and Diving
John Lytle, Notre Dame: The former Clearfield swimmer helped the Fighting Irish to sweep the Shamrock Invitational on Friday, defeating Denver, Michigan State and West Virginia.
Lytle anchored a victorious 200 medley relay team and broke out to an early lead as the 400 free relay team took home first place. He also took second in the 200 free, 100 free and as a member of the 800 free relay squad.
John Bodle, Westminster: Bodle swam one individual event against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, finishing eighth in the 200 fly. He also was a part of the 400 free relay team that finished seventh with a time of 3:34.46. The Titans fell to CMU 151-111.
Chris Bodle, Westminster: The former Bison swimmer took to the pool in the 1650 free (18:46.99) and 500 free (5:19.95) as the Titans were downed by Carnegie Mellon. He also joined his brother on the 400 free relay team that swam to a seventh-place finish.
Ryan Sayers, Washington & Jefferson: Sayers finished fourth in the 1-meter diving with a score of 199.10 as Washington & Jefferson took on Penn State-Behrend on Saturday. He dove to the same finish in the 3-meter competition compiling a score of 175.30. The Presidents were victorious 134-93.
Men's Basketball
Todd Hryn, Pitt-Greensburg: The former Clearfield forward is averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds in 14 games this season. The Bobcats are 5-12 on the season.
Women's Basketball
Michelle Peoples, Mount Aloysius: Peoples has appeared in three games this season for the 2-13 Lady Mounties.
Football
Nate Sipes, Slippery Rock: The former Curwensville football player was named The Rock's Special Teams Player of the Year for the 2008 season.
Nick Sipes, Clarion: Sipes matched his brother by being named 2008 Special Teams Player of the Year for the Golden Eagles.
Shawn Sopic, Clarion: Sopic represented the Golden Tide by being named Defensive Player of the Year for Clarion's 2008 campaign.
