Clearfield girls defeat Brookville, 42-38, in overtime
Saturday, January 31, 2009
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
HYDE - Since falling to Brookville 11 days ago, the Clearfield girls basketball team has been on a roll.

The Lady Bisons won the three games since playing the Lady Blue Raiders on Jan. 19, and were able to keep the ball rolling when Brookville came to town on Friday evening.

Clearfield controlled the game throughout, only to see the Lady Raiders hit big 3-pointer after big 3-pointer to tie things at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period, the Lady Bisons' tenacity paid off as they went to the foul line for the only points of the extra session, as Clearfield picked up a 42-38 win to extend its winning streak to four.

"We're beating good teams," said Lady Bison coach Joey Castagnolo. "(We're playing with) confidence. It just takes that one win coming from behind or to hold the lead ... we're just bubbling with it.

"(Brookville) is a scrappy team. I told them at the beginning of the game that a turnover here or a turnover there, or a rebound or a missed shot ... it's all going to be magnified in this game. They're a good, disciplined ball club."

Brookville trailed for the better part of 20 minutes after leading 11-10 with 6:33 left in the first half, until Morgan Castle converted a steal into a layup to tie the game at 38 and force overtime.

The Lady Bisons only attempted four shots in the four-minute extra period, but were rewarded for their aggressiveness in crashing the boards.

Sarah Kovalick gave Clearfield the lead for good after connecting on one of two attempts with 3:47 to play, and then later set the final by doing the same with :03.6 seconds on the clock.

Annie Janocko and Amber Byerly also downed a foul shot each to account for the Lady Bisons' scoring in overtime.

The Lady Raiders couldn't catch a break, as they went 0-for-9 from the field and missed a foul shot that would've tied it.

"I can't say enough about our defense," Castagnolo said. "We really buckled down the last two minutes of overtime. The threes (in regulation) made it look bad. ... We work on defense. Stanley (Solarczyk), I can't give him enough credit. He's the defensive coordinator of basketball. I can't say enough about how hard we work to exploit the other team with their patterns and stuff."

After taking a 21-16 lead into halftime, the Lady Bisons went ahead by as many as eight in the third, only to see the Lady Raiders heat up from behind the 3-point line.

The eight-point advantage quickly evaporated after threes from Castle and a pair for Brynna Hetrick sandwiched an Elizabeth Peters bucket to make it 28-27 with 2:38 to go in the quarter.

In all, Brookville connected on eight 3-pointers to Clearfield's two.

"I knew they would (shoot them), but they're not usually a big 3-point shooting team," said Castagnolo. "We're big inside so they can't dump it inside, so their whole philosophy changes when they play us. I didn't think they were as good of a 3-point shooting team ... they did a nice job."

Castle's second three made it a one-point contest again in the fourth, before the steal and layup tied it with just over a minute to play.

Gwenn Porter led all scorers with 12 points, while Kovalick, Byerly and Peters each finished with eight.

For Peters, the eight points tied a season-high.

"That's what we've been looking for from her because she's been struggling the last few games," Castagnolo said of Peters.

"It was a big confidence-booster - and that's why I started her. It got her confidence back. I have six or seven girls that I can start and I try to rotate them, but I need Elizabeth to get on board.

"We refused to lose again, and that was the whole team tonight. ... I just can't say enough about everybody. The bench helped me out, even if it was to give someone a break."

The win, coupled with a Punxsutawney loss, gives Clearfield a one-game advantage in the race for the second seed in the District 9 Class AAA playoffs, and evens the Lady Bisons' record at 8-8.

Clearfield is back in action Monday when it travels to face Johnsonburg.

The Lady Raiders won the jayvee game.
