Clearfield swimmers get past Brookville
Friday, February 06, 2009
By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
HYDE - Thursday night marked Senior Night for the Clearfield swimming and diving team, and the seniors marked their final home dual meet with a number of outstanding performances as the Bisons dominated from the jump and took down Brookville.

The boys were victorious 116-56 and the girls came out on top 115-67.

Taking advantage of their night, the upperclassmen controlled the win column, with Justin DeCasper, Shay Flanagan and Mark Krchnak all notching three wins on the night for the boys. Seniors Brady Mulhollem and Steven Williams also picked up victories.

On the girls side, Marisa Howell and Branda Smeltzer each grabbed four wins to set the pace for the rest of the Lady Bisons.

"The seniors really want to go out and do the best job possible so they leave on a nice memory and a good note," Clearfield head coach Jackie Morrison said. "So, there's already natural excitement and adrenaline tonight and, actually, I tried to can it a little bit and bring it down. We had talks this week about not getting overly excited, overly emotional. ... I think they did pretty well."

"This is an emotional night. I'm sure it's like that in all sports, but for us, we're family. This team is family."

It was a fitting sendoff for a group of swimmers who have created the core of the team for numerous years.

"This has been the heart of the team every year since their freshman year," Morrison said. "They're the ones that I've depended on for four years. When I've needed them they've always come through. They're my workhorses, they're my dependable ones, they're my responsible ones. They've taken a tremendous load on their shoulders.

"They will truly be missed, not just by the coaches but by the swimmers. We will notice that next year. ... I think they were a shining example for the underclassmen of what they should do."

They continued setting the example against Brookville, as Krchnak re-set his pool record in the 100 breaststroke and the boys did not drop a scored event. The girls were almost as dominant on their side.

Howell and Smeltzer were the biggest winners of the night, with both participating on the 200 medley relay team that opened the meet with a victory. Kaylee Bowser and Brandie Centi swam the last two legs of the race. The same four girls got together for a 200 free relay victory.

Smeltzer rounded out her effort with the top spot in the 200 free and a wire-to-wire win in Lane 6 in the marathon 500 freestyle. Howell posted a comeback win in the 100 fly and topped the field with a 1:08.81 in the 100 back.

For the boys it was a seemingly endless line of winners, with the spotlight once again finding Krchnak and his 100 breast performance. It was business as usual for "Hoss" as he effortlessly slid to a 1:00.01, just missing out on the benchmark one-minute performance.

Krchnak also dominated the 200 IM and joined fellow seniors DeCasper and Flanagan on the top 200 medley relay team. Kraig Peterson was the last member of the 200 medley group.

Flanagan had no peers in the 500 free, where his smooth, steady stroke saw him blow away the next-best swimmer by almost 43 seconds. He also lapped the second-place finisher - Mulhollem - in the 200 free for his third first-place finish. Mulhollem picked up an individual victory with a 1:06.52 in the 100 fly as he outlasted fading Raider Ryan Kerr.

DeCasper wrapped up the swimming wins for the departing seniors, adding 50 free and 100 free wins to his relay finish.

On the diving board Williams gave the fans something to cheer about when he scored a 219.20 to help Clearfield sweep the top three spots.

He garnered the top individual judge's score when he received an 8.5 on his second dive.

While the seniors grabbed the attention, there were underclassmen picking up top finishes and putting together personal achievements as well.

Centi proved tough to beat in the freestyle events, grabbing individual triumphs in the 50 free (27.35) and the 100 free (1:01.17). Sophomore Ashley Durandetta continued a strong season with a two-second victory in the 200 IM.

Kraig Peterson made sure he wasn't lost in the mix when he went mostly unchallenged in the 100 back, taking the event by a seven-second margin.

With the dual meet well in hand, the swimmers made sure to keep their attention on improving their personal times and getting ready for the fast-approaching postseason.

"We have some kids that are really close and we got two more through (to regionals) tonight," Morrison said. "That's what it's all about right now - racing against the clock and making the cuts that are going to help us in the team championship and state qualifying."

Freshman Juliana Mellgard qualified for the 50 free thanks to a strong first leg in the 200 free relay, putting her in a second event for the regional championships. Sophomore Candise Day joined her as the two girls will both see their first regional action. Day finished third in the 500 free, but her time of 6:39.62 was good enough for eligibility.

"(Candise) never qualified before in her life, and she qualified tonight. That always feels good," Morrison said. "Everybody on our team just loves this girl. She had a great cheering section for her in the 500.

"The qualifying time was 6:40. She just missed it against DuBois on Monday, and she went 6:39 tonight and made it. That will be her first experience at the regional meet. We're proud of that, and you especially have to feel good for someone that is so well-liked."

A mid-meet ceremony paid tribute to all of the Bison seniors as Flanagan, Krchnak, DeCasper, Mulhollem, Williams, Issac Lansberry, Corey Bookhamer, Howell, Smeltzer, Skylar DeHaven, Brittany Evans, Jenna Liegey and Christie Pizzella were all honored.

Clearfield is back in the pool on Monday at St. Marys - a match that will test the boys and give the girls a chance to lock up a winning season. No Clearfield swim team has ever had a losing campaign.

"It's a big meet on Monday for the girls," Morrison said. "It's important to them to maintain that tradition."
