Clearfield boys capture regional title; P-O's Harris smashes diving record
Monday, March 02, 2009
By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
UNIVERSITY PARK - It was quality over quantity for the Clearfield swimming and diving team on Day 2 of the District 6-9 Regional Championships at Penn State's McCoy Natatorium on Saturday.

Even though there was less action than Friday's competition, there were still quality swims, state bids tied up and records broken as the boys' side maintained its No. 1 team standing to take the regional team title, and the girls stood fast and finished third in the overall standings.

Despite being his school's lone representative at the meet, Philipsburg-Osceola's Jordan Harris made sure the Mountie presence was felt as well, obliterating the district record in the 1-meter diving competition with a 502.35. The previous mark was 462.70.

The Bison boys scored 289 points to finish ahead of the pack thanks to a trio of podium finishers in the diving event, an impressive sweep in the 500 freestyle and more fireworks from Mark Krchnak in the 100 breaststroke.

"For the boys it was mostly about scoring big points and winning the team title," Clearfield head coach Jackie Morrison said. "That's important to them. They've won this title now since 2003."

Those divers probably would have found even greater success were it not for Harris. Clearfield senior Steven Williams tried to keep up with the Mountie junior, but Harris took a 50-point advantage after the preliminary round and doubled that gap by the end of the semifinals.

When all was said and done, there was little standing in the way of Harris as he jumped, spun and flipped to a regional title and his third state berth in as many tries.

"I'll definitely do a lot better this year at states," Harris said. "I'm hoping for top five or top three.

"It's my ability in gymnastics and my background in that. When I get on a diving board it just all comes together."

With Harris ratcheting up the degree-of-difficulty and hitting dives others weren't even attempting with verve and accuracy, it quickly became clear this diver wasn't interested in being safe - he just wanted to be the best.

"Easy dives just don't look so good," Harris said. "I think it's good that I can go out, throw in hard dives and still nail them."

Also state-bound, Williams notched a 376.50 for second. Teammates Jason Maines (282.60) and Nathan Brzezinski (226.95) grabbed fourth and sixth, respectively.

The Bisons found it easier to grab victory in the swimming lanes, starting with a red-and-black-dominated 500 free. The race's final heat saw Shay Flanagan, Kraig Peterson and Brady Mulhollem going toe-to-toe for bragging rights in the marathon event.

Nobody in the field had much for Flanagan, though, as he swam his best time of the season in his top event, grabbing a nearly seven-second win with a 4:51.78. Peterson and Mulhollem followed him to the final wall to sweep the top three places.

Mulhollem's third-place time of 5:01.47 may be enough for him to grab a yet-to-be-announced at-large bid to the state meet.

Even with that impressive showing under its belt, Clearfield may have still saved the best for last.

Krchnak hit the water in the final race of the day and blasted through the competition for yet another 100 breast victory. This time around, "Hoss" topped his previous best and set a new meet record - his third of the weekend - with a 59.40, almost three seconds ahead of runner-up Everett Benson from Bellefonte.

"They're gaining a lot of confidence and realizing that not being fully rested they can still swim pretty amazing races," Morrison said.

"That's to their benefit. They actually have something more to look forward to. Instead of being concerned about hanging on, they have a lot more to go."

Justin DeCasper took the first of his two podium finishes with a sixth-place swim in the 100 free.

The Bison senior used a strong start and solid turns to vault himself to a victory in the penultimate heat, enough to slip onto the podium.

The result was slightly bittersweet, as DeCasper's success bumped teammate Jordan Mumma out of the final podium spot.

DeCasper also started strong as he opened the 400 free relay for Clearfield, but it wasn't enough. The group - also featuring Peterson, Mumma and Connor Shirey - was inched out by Bradford on the final lap and had to settle for second.

"I absolutely had a blast watching the 400 free relay," Morrison said. "I think they're a little disappointed, but they have no reason to have their heads down because they all had great splits. Those were four boys we thought could get the job done, and they did."

Peterson had three podium finishes on the day, adding a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke - where nobody could keep up with a record-setting run by Bishop McCort's Mitchell Smith.

The Lady Bisons failed to notch a victory, but still offered up plenty of podium and points-getting performances on the way to their team total of 183 points.

"We got through the first day and that's the way it goes," Morrison said. "However, there were still nice time drops, and that's the most important thing. Their times came down and they're swimming faster, and that's really what we're here for."

A pair of seniors celebrated their final regionals experience with nice showings, as Marisa Howell swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 free and Branda Smeltzer touched the wall in sixth in the 500 free.

The two joined forces with Brandie Centi and Kaylee Bowser in the 400 free relay, where they finished fourth in a star-studded final heat that showcased five of the top six teams in the meet.

"Branda Smeltzer had a great day," Morrison said. "She exceeded my expectations entirely. She's just an amazing little girl. She's brought it for us all year, and she didn't disappoint today."

Also powering Clearfield's team effort were divers Christie Pizzella and Sarah Lowder, a senior-freshman tandem that took the fourth and fifth positions in the 1-meter diving competition. Pizzella scored a total of 273.45 and Lowder was just behind her with 244.55.

Eligible swimmers and divers will now prepare for the ultimate challenge - the PIAA championships at Bucknell University. Class AA action will be held March 11 and 12.

"There's a long way to go," Morrison said. "We're going to celebrate tonight ... and get back to business starting tomorrow. We have a lot more work to do."
