Clearfield bounced by Franklin

FRANKLIN - Heading into Tuesday night's PIAA play-in game at Franklin, the focus of the Clearfield girls basketball team was squarely on the Lady Knights' Saddie Gravatt.

Despite knowing what kind of threat Gravatt posed from behind the 3-point arc, the Franklin guard still shot the lights out, and her 9-of-11 performance from long range led to a 56-16 win over the Lady Bisons, who made just three shots from the floor.

Gravatt finished the first quarter with four 3-pointers that put the game on ice early, and finished with a game-high 28 points.

"We couldn't stop her," said Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo. "We tried everything - we tried getting in her face - but she still scored. She shot NBA threes, and we usually don't run into girls that can shoot those kinds of threes. I was really impressed with that shooting performance, and it wasn't just her.

"I knew about (Gravatt), but I didn't know she had that good of range. I had a scouting report on them, and I thought we might be able to stymie them a little bit in the zone."

While Gravatt's 3-pointers accounted for 12 of Franklin's 14 first-quarter points, the Lady Bisons were struggling to get anything to fall.

Clearfield missed all seven of its shots in the opening frame, and all four points came on a pair of free throws each from Gwenn Porter and Sarah Kovalick.

Lady Bison senior Annie Janocko opened the second with two of her own, but the Lady Knights kept the hot hand from long distance and were able to carry a 30-8 lead into halftime.

Madison Sopic made the first bucket of the game for the Lady Bisons at the 2:01 mark of the second quarter, as Clearfield was just 1-of-23 in the first half and 3-of-43 in all.

"With the atmosphere and the pressure of a big-time game, we were rushing things," Castagnolo said. "Our offense in the first half was rushing things. This experience here is going to help. This is a big-time venue here - this team was undefeated at home.

"They play in a tough league, too. They play Mercyhurst and General McLane - they've only lost once and are No. 4 in the state."

Clearfield's offense scored six points in the third - four on the charity stripe on another from a Porter layup.

Gravatt single-handedly equaled the total with two more threes, as the Mercy Rule was in effect at the start of the fourth quarter.

Sopic added her second bucket of the game for Clearfield's only points in the final period, and finished tied with Porter with four points to lead the Lady Bisons.

The Lady Knights didn't have another player in double figures beside Gravatt, but finished 19-of-53 from the floor as a whole and made 13 3-pointers on 29 attempts.

Clearfield, which finished the season with a 13-12 mark, says goodbye to seniors in Janocko, Kovalick and Jocelyn Schultz, but Castagnolo believes this experience will help his squad next season.

"We finished last year 5-19 and we turned it around and had a 13-win season," said Castagnolo.

"We have a good foundation from their leadership ... all three of them.

"My girls didn't quit and we tried hard. It was a much better performance than the (District 9) championship game. ... I thought we played well defensively, they (Franklin) just couldn't miss."
