Sports Campus Roundup

By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
Winter sports are coming to an end and the spring season is just getting in gear. Here's a look at what some former local athletes are doing at the college level, whether they're wrapping up their season or looking to start off on the right foot:

Wrestling

Kyle Keane, Pitt-Johnstown: Out of the Mountain Cat lineup since Jan. 23, the former Bison returned to the mat for the 2008 Division II East Region Championships on Saturday.

The comeback fell a little short, though, as the No. 4-ranked Keane was tripped up by No. 1 Joe Shields of Mercyhurst, 7-0 in the 165-pound finals. The result was a repeat of a matchup between the two back in January, when they were ranked first and second.

Keane finished as runner-up at 3-1, getting by Casey Bradley with a 10-1 major decision and Seth Phalen 7-2 before a 5-3 defeat of Brandon Kelly in the semifinals. The Mountain Cat junior will now prepare to wrestle at the Division II National Tournament March 13-14 in Houston, Texas.

Track and Field

Ryan Jones, Westminster: The former Clearfield runner helped Westminster close out its indoor schedule at the Marietta Open on Saturday, going for a 1:11.88 in the 500 meters to finish seventh.

Rebecca Shiner, Westminster: The Lady Titan senior and Clearfield graduate finished third in the 800 meter event at the Marietta Open on Saturday with a time of 2:27.37.

The women's team set two school indoor records at the meet. Westminster will start its outdoor season at Coastal Carolina during its spring trip.

Nate Shadeck, Slippery Rock: A Clearfield alum, Shadeck helped The Rock to a fourth-place finish in Sunday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, running eighth in the 400 meters and racing a leg for the 4x400 relay team that finished sixth.

Baseball

Paul Keith, Penn State-Altoona: The former Mo Valley standout was chosen as an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player to Watch for the 2009 season. The Lions were picked to finish sixth in the league.

Matt Adams, Slippery Rock: Adams, a Philipsburg-Osceola graduate, was 2-for-3 in The Rock's 4-2, 6-5 doubleheader sweep of No. 11 West Chester on Wednesday.

Slippery Rock dropped a doubleheader to Shippensburg on Thursday. The Slippery Rock catcher had five hits, a double and four RBIs in two wins over East Stroudsburg on Monday.

Adams was also named the PSAC-Western Division Player of the Week after a huge first week of the season. The former Mountie batted .520 with four doubles, four home runs and 14 RBIs through the first five games of the year.

Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Jury was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in his team's doubleheader sweep of No. 11 West Chester on Wednesday.

The former Bison had a strong start to the season with a game-winning RBI against Mansfield and an inside-the-park home run versus the University of the Sciences in a Saturday twin bill.

Ryan Mostyn, IUP: The Crimson Hawk senior and Mountie alum was 1-for-4 with a walk in an 8-3 season-opening win against Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. IUP will finish out a four-game series against Apprentice School today and Saturday.

Tyler Noel, Mansfield: The former Glendale hurler is 0-3 with a 4.61 ERA and 15 strikeouts in three starts for the Mountaineers (3-6) this season.

Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: The Bald Eagle sophomore and Philipsburg-Osceola grad is batting .500 with six RBIs in four games for 2-4 Lock Haven.

Softball

Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: The former Lady Bison is batting .250 in four appearances for the No. 15 Lady Eagles (5-3), who started the season in Hawaii.

Rachelle Yarger, Clarion: Yarger, a P-O graduate, came up with an RBI in Sunday's season-opening doubleheader, as Clarion fell to Urbana and NYIT in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Lady Golden Eagles are 0-8 on the season and conclude their Florida trip with a pair of games today.
