Campus Roundup: Adams having big year for The Rock
Tuesday, March 31, 2009
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
With the spring season nearing its midway point, several local athletes have been excelling in their sports for their college or university. Here's a look at how each has fared so far:

Baseball

Matt Adams, Slippery Rock: Adams' 4-for-4 effort in the second game of a doubleheader with Indiana University of Pennsylvania wasn't enough, as The Rock lost a 12-8 decision after taking the first game. Adams, a former P-O catcher, smacked two doubles and a two-run homer, but the Crimson Hawks never trailed in the contest.

Adams also started the game-winning rally in the first game with a single in the bottom of the seventh. The Slippery Rock junior has started all 28 games and leads the team with a .495 average to go along with nine home runs and 44 RBIs.

Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Jury had a big game in a win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania, as he collected a pair of hits and drove in four runs, and later was a big part of a late-inning rally. After smacking his second two-run single, Jury scampered home with the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

The Clearfield graduate went 1-for-4 in the second game with an RBI. Slippery Rock is 19-9 on the season, and will return to action Wednesday at West Liberty State.

Paul Keith, Penn State-Altoona: Keith started the first game of a doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg, only to get a no-decision after allowing nine runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. For the season, Keith, a former Mo Valley athlete, has five starts to his credit and is 2-1 on the season. Keith has an ERA of 5.46 and has fanned 26 hitters in 29 2/3 innings of work.

The Lions (12-8) host Frostburg State this afternoon for another doubleheader.

Grady Luzier, Penn State-Altoona: Luzier continues to swing a hot bat for Penn State-Altoona, as he leads the squad with a .486 average. Luzier led the Lions (12-8) to a split with Pitt-Greensburg, as he smacked three hits and scored four runs in the first game. The West Branch grad added two more hits in the second game, which the Bobcats won.

Later in the week, Luzier smacked a two-run single and scored in a split with Hibert College.

Luzier leads the team with 13 multi-hit games, and currently has a four-game hitting streak. Luzier is third on the team in slugging percentage (.671), and leads the team in runs scored (22) and hits (34).

Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: McCamley has started in 20 of Lock Haven's 28 games, and is fourth on the team with a .288 average. The Eagles (10-18) were led by the former P-O first baseman's 3-for-4, three-RBI performance in a split with Mercyhurst. McCamley also scored two times for Lock Haven, which hosts Bloomsburg this afternoon.

Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: McGary went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks in the first game of a doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg, and followed it up with a two-hit, two-RBI effort in a 17-6 loss. McGary, a former Curwensville three-sport athlete, has made nine starts and is currently hitting .194 for the Panthers (6-7).

Ryan Mostyn, IUP: Mostyn, a former P-O stalwart, led the Crimson Hawks to a 12-8 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. Mostyn was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, as IUP avenged a loss from earlier in the day.

Mostyn is hitting .237 with six doubles and a pair of triples for the Crimson Hawks (12-10).

Tyler Noel, Mansfield: Noel is currently 1-6 on the season for the Mounties, who dropped a doubleheader to West Chester on Friday. The former Glendale pitcher has an ERA of 6.90 and has 25 strikeouts in 30 innings of work. Mansfield is back in action Wednesday at Lake Erie.

Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: The Panthers (6-7) dropped a pair of games against Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday. Solley was 0-for-3 in a 7-3 loss in the first game, but bounced back with a single and an RBI in a 17-6 defeat. The former Curwensville catcher has made nine starts and has a .273 average with five RBIs.

Pitt-Bradford is back in action Wednesday when it hosts a doubleheader with Penn State-Behrend.

B.J. Stephens, Mount Aloysius: The Mounties (11-10) saw an eight-game winning streak snapped by Penn State-Behrend, which won both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. Stephens has seen action in a pair of games, going 1-for-2.

The Mount is at Penn State-Berks on Wednesday for a pair of games.

Dylan Viehdorfer, Geneva College: The Golden Tornadoes couldn't hang on to a five-run lead, as Thomas More erupted for seven unanswered runs to take the series, 3-1. Viehdorfer, a West Branch alum, is 0-for-2 with an RBI this season.

Geneva (13-6) hosts Thomas & Jefferson for a nine-inning contest on Wednesday.

Tyler Westover, UPJ: The Mountain Cat baseball team is currently ranked No. 5 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region Poll despite going 1-3 on Friday and Saturday against Shepherd (W.V.) University. Westover, a Flinton native, broke a scoreless tie in the first game on Friday, as he smacked a two-run homer for the only runs in the game.

Westover, a freshman, has made 20 starts and has a .299 average to go along with a pair of home runs and 17 RBIs.

Softball

Alanna Luzier, Penn State-Altoona: Luzier was one of two players to record a hit in the first game of a doubleheader, as the Lady Lions were swept by Juniata last week. The Clearfield alum is hitting .333 for Penn State-Altoona, which ended the week strong with a doubleheader sweep of Hibert. Luzier has started in all 12 games for the Lady Lions (3-9), and is in the top four in batting average (.333), slugging percentage (.417), runs scored (9), hits (12), doubles (3) and stolen bases (6).

Penn State-Altoona travels to Frostburg State this afternoon for another twin bill.

Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: The ninth-ranked Lady Eagles swept a doubleheader from No. 15 California (Pa.) on Monday to move to 21-4 on the season with Pataky going 0-for-1 in a pinch-hit appearance. Pataky, a former Lady Bison standout, has three starts to her credit and has played in nine other contests.

Lock Haven is back in action at Clarion this afternoon.

Rachelle Yarger, Clarion: Yarger got the Lady Eagles off to a quick start with an RBI single against Edinboro, which led to a two-game sweep of the Lady Scots. The P-O graduate has played in 15 games and has 13 starts on the season. She has driven in a pair of runs and has a .158 batting average.

Clarion (4-14) hosts nationally ranked Lock Haven today for a doubleheader.

Track and Field

John Bowman and Michael Johnson, Penn State-Behrend: The PSU-Behrend men finished second at the Bill Van Horne Invitational over the weekend. The team is back in action Saturday at Washington & Jefferson.

Ryan Jones, Westminster: Jones was one of Westminster's top performers at the Western Pennsylvania Championships over the weekend. The Titans placed fifth in the seven-team event.

Jones finished the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.13, good enough for 13th place.

Rebecca Shiner, Westminster: Shiner finished second in the 800-meter run for the Lady Titans, who took home first at the Western Pennsylvania Championships on Saturday at California (Pa.) University. Westminster dominated the 800, despite not winning the event, as it claimed four of the top five spots, led by Shiner's 2:24.98.

Westminster is back in action Saturday at the Mount Union Invitational.
