Campus Roundup: Area athletes faring well during Spring Season
Wednesday, April 08, 2009
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
The spring season is quickly coming to a close with conference tournaments looming on the horizon. Several local athletes have taken to the diamond or the track for their respective colleges or universities. Here's a look at how each of them is faring this season:

Baseball

Matt Adams, Slippery Rock: Adams continues to swing a hot bat for The Rock, as it swept a pair of doubleheaders from Lock Haven over the weekend. The P-O alum went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI in Slippery Rock's dominating 17-3 win in the first game on Saturday.

Adams homered and also had a double in the win, and added three more hits, two of which were doubles, in four at-bats in the second game of the double dip, a 9-3 triumph.

Adams, who is currently hitting .484 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs, was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks in the first game on Sunday, which The Rock (25-9) won 5-3 in eight innings. The former Mountie catcher bounced back with two hits in three plate appearances in the last game of the weekend, a 13-2 win.

Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Jury was 2-for-4 in Slippery Rock's 17-3 win over Lock Haven, the first of four wins over the Eagles last weekend. Jury, who is hitting .406 with eight doubles, three home runs and 34 RBIs, added a double in the second game of the doubleheader, which The Rock won 9-3.

The former Clearfield shortstop came through in the clutch on Sunday, as he smacked a two-run home run to lift Slippery Rock to a 5-3 win in eight innings.

Jury added another single and two more RBIs in a 13-2 win in the second game.

The Rock (25-9) is back on the diamond this afternoon at Youngstown State.

Paul Keith, Penn State-Altoona: Keith picked up a win on the mound for the Lions in a doubleheader split with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference leaders Penn State-Behrend last weekend.

The former Mo Valley athlete tossed all seven innings and struck out five in his squad's 6-5 win that avenged a wild 26-14 setback in the first game.

Keith is 3-1 on the season with a 5.40 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings of work.

Grady Luzier, Penn State-Altoona: Luzier continues to lead Penn State-Altoona at the plate, as he is tops on the team with a .461 average. The West Branch product got the Lions off to a good start with a three-run home run in a 26-14 loss to Penn State-Behrend, but went 1-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in a 6-5 win.

Luzier has three home runs and 25 RBIs this season for PSU-Altoona, which is 14-12 on the season.

Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: McCamley and the Eagles lost all four games in a series against Slippery Rock over the weekend. Lock Haven (11-23) fell 17-3 and 9-3 on Saturday, and lost 5-3 in eight innings and 13-2 on Sunday.

The former P-O first baseman was 2-for-12 in the series with an RBI and a run scored.

Lock Haven travels to East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader this afternoon.

Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: McGary was 2-for-4 with a double in a 13-8 loss to Frostburg State on Sunday. The former Curwensville athlete followed up his two-hit game with a single and an RBI, as the Panthers dropped both games of the twin bill.

McGary was 3-for-7 earlier in the week in a split doubleheader with Penn State-Behrend. McGary is hitting .313 on the season and has scored 15 runs for Pitt-Bradford (7-10), which travels to Hilbert College on Thursday.

Ryan Mostyn, IUP: The Crimson Hawks split a pair of doubleheaders with Clarion over the weekend with the former P-O standout going 2-for-10 in the series.

Mostyn has appeared in all 28 contests for IUP and has 27 starts to his credit, as he is hitting .230 with seven doubles, three triples and eight RBIs this season.

IUP (14-14) is at Seton Hill on Thursday for a doubleheader.

Tyler Noel, Mansfield: The former Viking standout picked up his first win of the season on Sunday, as Mansfield swept a pair of games from Bloomsburg. Noel pitched one inning the first game of the sweep, where he struck out two hitters and allowed a hit.

Noel followed up his first win with his first save in the second game, as he nailed down the final three outs of a 6-3 win after striking out one of the three hitters he faced.

Noel has an ERA of 6.47 in 32 innings of work. The Glendale product has scattered 47 hits and has struck out 28 for the Mounties (14-22).

Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: Solley collected a hit and scored a run in a split doubleheader with Penn State-Behrend last week. Solley, a Curwensville alum, has 12 starts under his belt and is hitting .237 on the season with eight RBIs.

Tyler Westover, UPJ: The Mountain Lions took three out of four games from Wheeling Jesuit over the weekend with help from Westover, a Flinton native.

Westover was 2-for-4 in the second game on Sunday to follow a 1-for-3 effort with an RBI in the second game on Saturday.

Westover is hitting .299 with 19 RBIs and a pair of home runs to his credit for Pitt-Johnstown (23-11), which entertains Shippensburg this afternoon.

Softball

Alanna Luzier, Penn State-Altoona: The Lady Lion softball team fell to 3-15 on the season after dropping a pair of doubleheaders last week.

Luzier, a Clearfield grad, paced Penn State-Altoona in the first game against Penn State-Behrend, a 3-1 defeat. Luzier went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and scored the only run on a wild pitch.

In the second game against Behrend, Luzier scored a run and had a stolen base but was 0-for-3.

The Lady Lions, who host Penn State-Greater Allegheny Thursday, also dropped a pair against Mount Aloysius. Luzier was 1-of-6 with another stolen base on the day, and has nine of Penn State's 15 stolen bases on the season.

Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: The Lady Eagles, currently ranked No. 6, went 3-1 over the weekend after sweeping West Chester and splitting a doubleheader with Bloomsburg. Pataky, a former Lady Bison, is 2-for-16 at the plate after appearing in 13 games.

Rachelle Yarger, Clarion: Yarger's 3-for-4 performance against Millersville wasn't enough, as the Lady Eagles lost the game 6-4 after coming up short in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Yarger smacked a pair of doubles in her three-hit performance, drove in a run and scored twice for Clarion (4-18), which hosts Mercyhurst this afternoon.

The Lady Eagles couldn't crack the win column on Sunday, either, as Indiana University of Pennsylvania took a pair of games.

Yarger raised her average to .192 and has seen action in 20 of Clarion's 22 contests.

Track and Field

John Bowman, Penn State-Behrend: Bowman, a Clearfield graduate, notched a fifth-place finish at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in the javelin and added a 20th-place finish in the discus.

Bowman's javelin traveled 159 feet, while the discus went 106-7.

Michael Johnson, Penn State-Behrend: Johnson finished 10th in the 400 hurdles at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday, and followed it up with a tie for fifth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-foot-8. The former Clearfield standout also helped the 1600 relay team to a sixth-place finish in 3:37.92.

Penn State-Behrend, which claimed the men's title at the event, returns to action on Saturday at the Slippery Rock Invitational.

Rebecca Shiner, Westminster: Shiner continues to be solid for the Lady Titans in the 800 meter run.

The former Lady Bison finished third in the event at the Jack Hazen Open at Malone University, where Westminster was sixth in both team standings, on Saturday. Shiner crossed the line in 2:26.99, just ahead of teammate Christine Gettemy.

Westminster is back on the track Saturday at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
