Purchase Line mulls construction needs Tuesday, November 03, 2009 By Jane Elling Staff Writer COMMODORE - At last night's Purchase Line Voting Committee work session, the board discussed the North and South Elementary Schools and considered what the construction needs are. A feasibility study presentation was given May 27, 2008, by HHSDR Architects/Engineers/ Planners of Sharon that gave details of conditions inside and outside the buildings and the need for renovation and roof work. Last night board members talked about the need for new roofs on both schools and Roy Markle asked, "Have we abandoned renovation?" He later said the board needs to make a decision about renovation and "get started." In speaking of the roofs, Matthew Pearce said the board needs to look at alternatives to bring the cost down. "It's foolish not to investigate." He added, "I can't imagine doing one (school) and not the other." Markle said the renovation and roofs need to be done at the same time and the architect and engineers need to coordinate the work. Galen Edwards agreed, saying the board needs to move forward and now is the time. In answer to a question after the meeting, Janice Pearce, business manager, said there is $2.2 million reserved for the projects. The elementary schools opened in 1976. The board also discussed the following with possible action at the Nov. 9 regular meeting: l hire a four-hour cafeteria cook and a five-hour custodian. District Superintendent Tina Hazelet said reviews of applications and interviews will be done this week. l a professional development leave for Carol Ayers, elementary principal, for the second semester of 2009-10 and the first semester of 2010-11. l grant tenure status to Jason Kline. l the designation of Dr. Susan Sibert as the official observer/rater for teacher observations and evaluation. This includes department chairs and titled people. l hire an assistant boys' basketball coach. The board held an executive session for negotiations immediately following the public comment period and when it went back in session denied a third level Purchase Line Education Association grievance. Markle said since September the board has not been able to get the solicitor to meet with various district officials so a decision can be made. Another executive session was held following the meeting for personnel and negotiations. Board meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the high school boardroom.
