WEEKEND EVENTS Thursday, November 19, 2009 Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number. The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland. Thursday Art shows The Susquehanna River Arts Center announced a new members' showcase is being held at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library. It features the work of Christion Iraca, illustration, and Dan Mohney, photography. This exhibit will be held through Nov. 28. For more information, call 765-5621 or 765-5975. --- An art show titled "The Season of Fall" is being held at the Clearfield Hospital on the first floor. Friday Auction An auction will be held Friday at the Karthaus firehall at 6 p.m. Jerry will be there and there will be frozen foods, snacks, party goods and more. Also, there will be 50/50 rip-open tickets and the kitchen will be open. Dance Smithmill Veterans of Foreign Wars Stephen Kandrach Post No. 6321 is having a dance Friday from 9 p.m. to midnight. Music will be provided by The Boomers. The event is open to the public and those attending must be 21 or older to attend. Cover charge is $3. Saturday Auction Clearfield Alliance Christian School will hold its eighth annual PTO auction Saturday, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and the auction beginning at 10 a.m. Just a few of the items to be auctioned include a Penn State jersey autographed by Joe Paterno, 22-inch screen TV, tools, toys, furniture, gift certificates to many local businesses, event tickets, classroom theme baskets including country/rustic, snowmen, Pittsburgh Steelers, Penn State, camping, car cleaning and crafts plus much more. There will be food available, as well as a pumpkin roll and apple dumpling sale. Basket party The Coalport Streetscape Committee will sponsor its annual basket party Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at the Coalport firehall. Doors open at 2 p.m. and drawings begin at 4 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door. All proceeds benefit the streetscape project. Benefit breakfast Free and Accepted Masons Osceola Mills Lodge No. 515 will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday from 7-10 a.m. to benefit Madison Anderson, who was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, Meningccocemia. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Chicken and biscuit dinner A chicken and biscuit dinner will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Curwensville Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 268. Included in the meal are mashed potatoes, a vegetable and dessert. Takeouts will be available. The cost is $6.50. Country music Free country music provided by Sundown will be offered at the Oklahoma-Salem firehall on the Oklahoma end Saturday at 7 p.m. The kitchen will be open. Craft show DuBois Area High School marching band will hold a craft show Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the high school. DuBois light-up night The arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the community Christmas tree are set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the DuBois City Park Amphitheater. Festivities will include the lighting of several community Christmas trees, the arrival of Santa Claus and Christmas music at the stage provided by DuBois Area Middle School choir and DuBois Area High School band students. The program will be interpreted in sign language for the hearing impaired. A procession, led by Santa, will follow to the American Legion George D. Montgomery Post No. 17, where children will get a complimentary picture in exchange for an item for the troops, food pantry or a cash donation for shipping. The festivities will include carols provided by the DuBois Vocal Arts Ensemble, coloring pages for kids and a giant card that will be sent to the troops. Fall fundraiser The International Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 812 Auxiliary of Clearfield will hold a fall fundraiser Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. There will be a bake sale, bingo, Chinese auction and raffles. Also, there will be hoagies with red sauce for $3.50 and homemade beef vegetable soup and chili for $2 each. All proceeds go to the local charities. Raffles include two televisions and a microwave, a lottery tree with a Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles yard sign and a movie basket with a DVD player. Free meal Living Bread Ministries, 628 Daisy St., Clearfield will offer a free meal every Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The meal is first-come, first-served. Shoe bank The West Branch Area Shoe Bank will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Morrisdale United Methodist Church, state Route 53, Morrisdale. All children up to age 18 will be given new socks and sneakers if they have CHIP or Access cards. There will also be a large supply of gently used shoes and boots for everyone. Singles dance New Horizons Singles Club will hold a dance Saturday from 8-11 p.m. at DuBois Veterans of Foreign Wars James J. Patterson Post No. 813, 114 Fuller St., DuBois. This is a Toys for Tots dance. Prices are $5 for members and $7 for non-members. For more information, call 371-3887. Sneaker Closet The Sneaker Closet at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at Second and Walnut streets, Clearfield, will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Children up to age 18 who have Access or CHIP cards may get sneakers, a pair of socks, a book and a stuffed animal. A limited supply of winter boots, gloves, hats and scarves will also be available free of charge. Children must be present to be fitted properly, bring their Access or CHIP cards and be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information, call the church office at 765-9222. Thanksgiving dinner Ramey United Methodist Church invites everyone to join in a celebration of Thanksgiving as it offers a free meal Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the church, located on Main Street in Ramey. Organizers said all are welcome to attend this celebration of the gifts that have been given to the church over the past year and its ability to share these gifts with others. Sunday Breakfast Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post No. 1785 will serve breakfast Sunday from 7-10 a.m. at the post home. Museum open Coalport Area Coal Museum, located in the Coalport community building at 916 Forest St., is open Sundays from 1-4 p.m. The museum houses more than 350 artifacts in 17 displays, featuring the original tools, equipment, texts, photos, scale-model and full-size replicas of coal mining heritage. A comprehensive collection of genealogical materials from the Glendale Valley area (including all cemetery listings and more than 4,600 indexed obituaries) is in the library/reference room.
