Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit or not-for-profit organizations or events that benefit the community.
All events are open to the public.
To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number.
The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section.
The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland. Thursday
Art shows
A winter scenes art show is being presented at Clearfield Hospital, first floor, until Jan. 16. The paintings are by local artists.
The show is organized by Dottie Evans and Anna Marie Toto, and assisted by Gloria Rowles.

An art show sponsored by the Susquehanna River Arts Center is being presented at Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library. It is a winter theme and features members' artwork. The show will be open until Feb. 6.

Craft/flea market
Lawrence Grange, located on Old Erie Pike, will hold a craft/flea market Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Some of the items include Avon, baskets, live Christmas wreaths, pet treats, Christmas ornaments, crafts, jewelry, new and high-end baby clothes, books, and various other items.
To reserve a table, call 236-2882. The kitchen will be open.
Friday
Fish dinner
Columbia Fire Co., Osceola Mills, will sponsor a dinner Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the firehall.
It includes baked or fried fish, potatoes, vegetables, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, roll and dessert. Soup and a full salad bar are available for eat-in only. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children. Takeouts are available.
Delivery is available by calling 339-6601 Friday before 4 p.m. Proceeds benefit the fire company.
Flea market
The public is invited to the Clearfield Center for Active Living Friday from 9 a.m. to noon for a flea market and raffle. Raffle tickets will be available on a red-berry wreath, and 50/50 chances will be sold. Refreshments will be available.
Discounted tickets to the Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre musical "The Sound of Music" are offered for Saturday's performance. Information will be available regarding the center's gardening series and other activities.
The center is located in the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging Inc. building at 103 N. Front St., Clearfield.
"The Search for Peace"
"The Search for Peace" will be presented for the 50th consecutive year Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 4:30 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Curwensville United Methodist Church, located at State and Walnut streets, Curwensville.
Admission is free to the unique adaptation of the nativity story. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of 10 or more who live outside a 15-mile radius of Curwensville may request seats by calling the church's office at 236-1976. Reserved seating is limited to 100 seats per request.
Guests with reserved seats must arrive at the church no later than 30 minutes prior to its start. Any seats that are held and not claimed 30 minutes prior to the opening of the pageant will be opened to the public.
Saturday
Auction
Lawrence Grange will hold an auction Saturday at 6 p.m. The kitchen will be open.

Bigler-Jackson-Woodland Fire Co. will hold an auction on Saturday. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the auction begins at 6 p.m. at the Bigler hall. There will be fresh produce, frozen and canned goods, tools, toys, seasonal items and more. The kitchen will be open.
Breakfast with Santa
Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department will have Breakfast with Santa Saturday from 8-11 a.m. at the Agriculture Building in the Clearfield Driving Park. The meal is free for children 12 and younger, and the cost is $5 for those 12 and older.
Those attending should bring cameras to take pictures of the children with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Children's event
As part of the Downtown DuBois Open House, children of all ages are invited to DuBois Public Library Saturday from 1-3 p.m.
They will be able to write a letter to Santa in the children's library, then give it to Mrs. Claus for delivery to the North Pole. She will be reading stories in the library's program room, where a gingerbread village will also be built with the help of all the children.
The village will be on displayed in the window of Hockman's Candy Store during the Christmas season.

Christmas bazaar
St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Sandy Ridge will hold a Christmas bazaar Saturday at 8 a.m.
The event will feature crafts, baked foods, lunch and Christmas decorations.
Christmas cookie and candy sale
Morrisdale United Methodist Church, 3540 Morrisdale-Allport Highway, will host a homemade Christmas cookie and candy sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Christmas concert
A Christmas gospel music concert featuring Rodney Probst will be held at Bible Tabernacle in Mineral Springs Saturday at 7 p.m.
The concert is free to the public and everyone is welcome.
Christmas craft show
A Christmas craft show will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bigler Township building, Madera.
Available will be a variety of good quality craft vendors selling homemade candy and fudge, Grams Jams and Jellies, candles, floral items, baked goods, a white elephant sale and more.

Christmas party
A Christmas party for children 12 and younger of the Downriver area will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's social hall, Frenchville. Children may have lunch with Santa, and all children will receive gifts and treats.
St. Mary's Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Leigey Renaud Post No. 8386 and the Mosquito Creek Sportsmen's Club Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring the event.
Country music
Free country music will be provided by local musicians Spruce Creek Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Oklahoma-Salem firehall (Oklahoma end).
The kitchen will be open.
Flea market, craft sale
Osceola Mills United Methodist Church, 303 Curtin St., will have a holiday flea market and craft sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the church basement.
Contact Betsy at 339-7124 or Brenda at 339-6139 to reserve an eight-foot table space for $10. A luncheon will be available.
Holiday bake sale
New Hope Christian Fellowship at Houtzdale will hold a holiday bake sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Parade
Santa will be arriving in Clearfield Borough Saturday at 11:45 a.m. on West Market Street to kick off the annual Clearfield B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 540 Community Christmas Parade at noon.
At 12:30 p.m., there will be a reception with Santa Claus at the Elks lodge, 301 N. Second St. All children are invited and can enjoy free hot dogs and cocoa.
Adults will be charged $2. Each child will receive a Christmas stocking filled with presents.
Santa's house open
Santa's house will be open in Clearfield Saturday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Sunday from 3-5 p.m., Dec. 11 from 4:30-7:30 p.m., Dec. 12 from noon to 1:30 p.m., Dec. 18 from 4:30-7:30 p.m., Dec. 19 from 5-7 p.m., Dec. 20 from 4-6 p.m. and Dec. 22 from 5-7 p.m.
Also, through Dec. 20, letters to the North Pole may be left in the mail slot. Include a return address for a response from Santa and Santa's elves from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, Clearfield campus.

Sneaker closet
The Sneaker Closet at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at Second and Walnut streets, Clearfield, will be open Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon.
Children up to age 18 who have an Access or CHIP card can get new sneakers, a pair of socks, a book and a stuffed animal.
Warm gloves, hats, scarves and a limited supply of boots are also available.
Children must be present to be fitted properly, bring their Access or CHIP cards and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
This will be the only day the Sneaker Closet will be open in December; it will be open in January.
Thrift shop
Emmanuel Thrift Shop will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Gloves and hats are free, and two bags of merchandise can be purchased for $1.
Used book and yard sale
A used book and yard sale to benefit Holt Memorial Library will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 17 N. Front St., Philipsburg.
Sunday
Auction
A Christmas and more auction will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hyde Fire Co.
Consignors will have gifts, decorations, food, baked goods from the fudge shop in Osceola Mills and more. The kitchen will be open. Door prizes will be awarded, and the fire company will be selling 50/50 chances and rip-open tickets.
Breakfast
Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post No. 1785 will serve breakfast Sunday from 7-10 a.m.
Christmas concert
The Valley Voices' annual Christmas concert will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Rowland Theater in Philipsburg.
The concert is free. In lieu of the price of a ticket, patrons are asked to bring at least $5 or more of non-perishable food items, which will then be distributed to the Moshannon Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola and West Branch area food banks.
Plan to attend and help the Valley Voices fill the 1,001-seat theater while helping fill the food banks' shelves.
Free movie
A free Christmas movie matinee will be held at the Ritz Theater in Clearfield Sunday at 2 p.m. Children will receive a free small popcorn and soda.
The event is hosted by Clearfield B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 540 and CNB Bank.
Recital
The music students of Mark Wurster will present their winter recital Sunday at 3 p.m. at Curwensville Presbyterian Church.
Students will perform a variety of music including Christmas, sacred, classical and popular selections.
All are invited to attend, and refreshments will be served following the program.
