By Jane Elling Staff Writer
COMMODORE - At Saturday's ceremony at Purchase Line High School, Edward Gaydosh, graduate of Commodore Elementary School and Green Township High School Class of 1954, was the eleventh inductee to the Alumni Hall of Fame at the event sponsored by the Purchase Line Red Dragon Foundation.
Souvenirs showing the school colors of black and orange from Gaydosh's sports career at Green Township were on display in the library and a buffet was held in the cafeteria. The Gaydosh family and alumni from classes 1956, 1961 and 1966 gathered in the gymnasium for a buffet. Music and socializing was held after the induction ceremony in the auditorium.
The emcee was Gaydosh's son Eddie G. and son Kevin also took part in the presentation. Boy Scouts from Troop No. 115 led the Pledge of Allegiance and Purchase Line teacher Larry Peterson was the pianist both for the Star Spangled Banner and preceding the presentation.
The opening prayer was given by The Very Reverend Mitred Archpriest George Mitchell from the Christ Our Savior Orthodox Church in which Gaydosh is still extremely active.
Renee Lash, president of the Red Dragon Foundation Trustees gave an overview of the Foundation and recognition of the 2001-2010 honorees. They include, beginning in 2001, Sara Hess Wellen, George LaVanish, Elsie Tucker Young, Kathryn R. Mahaffey, 50th Anniversary of Purchase Line School District, Dorothy Prushnok Rairigh, Dwight Brocious, James Tyger, James Klyap and Elaine Peles McMulllen.
Comments were also given by friends and former teachers Frank Sebastian and Jim Klyap and Matt Pearce, school board president who presented the Library Plaque.
Klyap and Lash also presented to Gaydosh, the Distinguished Alumni Plaque, a personal plaque and a gift of a chair blind from the foundation.
During the ceremony, photographs were shown depicting the life of Gaydosh who was raised in Commodore and currently lives in the same house in which he was born. He was the youngest of 11 children and the last of five boys. As the son of immigrants from Czechoslovakia, family ties along with religious and ethnic identity were important to him all through his life and remain a central part of his life today. He and his wife, the late Patricia (Zasadny) Gaydosh, also instilled these qualities into their children, Eddie G., Kevin and Tonya (Duriez). Tonya and Doug have two children, Kara and Chauntel. Kevin is married to Christine.
During his high school years, Gaydosh played three scholastic sports, not including summer baseball. He competed at the varsity level four years in football, three years basketball and two years in track.
A booklet was prepared by the Red Dragon Foundation. One page gives congratulations from his brothers Andy, John and Mike and sisters Marge and Betty.
The booklet continues to tell the story of his life, his employment career and the many activities he has been involved in for Purchase Line School and students.
A page has the Purchase Line Sports Boosters thanking Gaydosh for many years of dedicated service. The various activities he has been involved in are listed and they congratulate him for his service.
