Brockway man killed in accident
Thursday, November 01, 2012
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - A fatal accident occurred yesterday at 4:50 p.m. on U.S. Route 219 in Washington Township, Jefferson County.
State police at DuBois report Clarence Anderson, 79, of Brockway was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County coroner.
Matthew Heitzenrater of Brockway was traveling north when he came upon a slow-moving vehicle and applied his brakes, causing his truck tractor to jack knife on the wet roadway. The tractor began sliding north across the roadway counterclockwise. The front of Heitzenrater's tractor struck the driver's side of a vehicle driven south by Anderson, forcing it against a guide rail on the west berm.
Brandon Lewis of Brockway, who was traveling south, attempted to avoid the tractor by applying his brakes and steering right. But, the back of Heitzenrater's tractor cab struck the front driver's side of Lewis' vehicle, also forcing it onto the west berm against the guide rail.
The roadway was blocked by the crash and closed for five hours.
Brockway Fire Department, Brockway Ambulance and Falls Creek Fire Department assisted at the scene.
