Woman arraigned in shooting of nurse
Friday, December 7, 2012
By Josh Woods Staff Writer
WEST DECATUR - A 69-year-old West Decatur woman who allegedly shot a 26-year-old registered nurse at her home yesterday afternoon was arraigned last night before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins.
Marlene Kenjora was arraigned on charges of criminal attempt-criminal homicide, aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, recklessly endangering another person and simple assault following an incident at her home on Morgan Run Road.
According to a court affidavit, Centre Home Care Services employee Erin Schaeffer was at Kenjora's home for visitation when an argument ensued over her prescribed medications. Due to Kenjora's belligerent and irate behavior, Schaeffer contacted Clearfield-Jefferson County Mobile Crisis and requested a mobile crisis worker respond to the residence. Kenjora then raised a handgun and fired one shot, striking Schaeffer in the left side of the head, the affidavit says. Schaeffer exited Kenjora's residence, got into her vehicle and drove to a neighbor's residence to seek assistance, the affidavit says.
Decatur Township Police Chief Timothy O'Leary was dispatched to the scene at approximately 4:15 p.m. and found a neighbor applying pressure to Schaeffer's wound, the affidavit says. Schaeffer was coherent, and O'Leary remained with her until Moshannon Valley Emergency Medical Services arrived, the affidavit says. Schaeffer was transported to Altoona Regional Health System for treatment of a gunshot wound, where she is listed in stable but guarded condition.
Responding officers established a perimeter around Kenjora's home and made contact with her by phone. She exited the side door of her residence and was taken into custody without incident, the affidavit says, and a .22 caliber revolver was found at the scene.
State police at Clearfield and Morris-Cooper Regional police assisted at the scene.
A preliminary hearing for Kenjora is scheduled for Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. before Hawkins.
