Farmery and Peters help lead Clearfield to win over Penns Valley
Saturday, January 12, 2013
By Andy Stine Sports Writer
HYDE - It didn't take long for the Clearfield girls basketball team to figure out how to beat Penns Valley's quick guards. The point of emphasis was to pound the ball inside to center Dakota Farmery, and the senior did not disappoint.
Farmery scored early and often against the Lady Rams, finishing the night with 27 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to help the Lady Bison top Penns Valley, 49-39, on Friday evening at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.
"She had a nice touch inside tonight," said Lady Bison head coach Joey Castagnolo. "She didn't rush things. Down at Tyrone, we hurried things from the beginning and we missed a lot of easy shots. Tonight, we took our time and the girls came through for us."
"Dakota was on fire. She used the glass nice. She had a nice pull-up jumpshot. She dominated on the offensive side. I can't say enough about her."
Farmery and Breanna Peters went to work early for Clearfield, scoring all of the Lady Bison's 15 points in the opening period.
Farmery demonstrated a wide range of post moves throughout the contest that led to easy baskets in the paint for the center. She scored 11 points in the first quarter, while Peters had four. The Lady Bison led 15-5 after the first quarter.
Peters also had a double-double in the game, ending her evening with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bison.
"I ask so much of her," said Castagnolo of Peters. "She has to take the ball up against the press because the guards were so quick with Brittany (Renaud). I like to have a mismatch with her bringing it up. She did fine."
Penns Valley went on a 13-4 run to start the second quarter due to hot shooting from the corner from Ashley Struble. Struble did not miss a bucket in the frame and pulled her team to within a point, while scoring one of her team's two 3-pointers of the game.
But Clearfield went on its own run, outscoring the Lady Rams, 10-2, in the last three minutes of the first half to go into halftime with an 8-point lead.
The Lady Bison defense went back to work to start the second half and did not give up a point until there were less than four minutes left in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Farmery and Peters each recorded baskets to start the second half and got some help from the Lady Bison backcourt with Tessa Munshower and Renaud each scoring a bucket to start the second half.
Clearfield led 40-28 after three quarters of play.
"(Penns Valley) started making some shots and we got lazy on defense," said Castagnolo. "At halftime, I changed my defense and she (Struble) didn't get those shots in the second half.
"That's what I thought was the big turning point. We came out of halftime and we held them scoreless for the first four minutes. I really thought we played some nice defense there."
Farmery closed things out in the fourth quarter, leading the Lady Bison with five points, despite getting her fourth foul early in the period. Peters hit a pair of free throws in the stanza, while Maggie Sopic made a shifty reverse layup that wooed the crowd late in the game.
Struble led the Lady Rams with 14 points and six rebounds, while Kelsey Boone scored six points and grabbed eight boards.
"We played as a team," said Castagnolo. "We had some nice passes on the open floor. It doesn't matter who scores and the girls realize that. That's teamwork. And the guards realize our strengths are inside."
In the junior varsity game, Penns Valley defeated Clearfield, 27-17. Emily Ryan led all scorers for the Lady Bison with 11 points.
Clearfield improved its record to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain League. The Bison travel to Central Mountain on Monday.
