Parker Dam to host Cearfield YMCA's Winterfest Jan. 26-27
Friday, January 18, 2013
Winterfest 2013 will be held Jan. 26-27 at Parker Dam State Park.
The event is hosted by the Clearfield YMCA and has activities for everyone.
On Saturday, The Hilltop Howlers will have a snowmobile fun run and are asking participants to register at pavilion No. 7 starting at 9 a.m.
Trails are being groomed for the event and all snowmobiles must be registered to participate.
The Blizzard Volleyball Tournament starts at 11 a.m. It will be played on the beach with relaxed volleyball rules and a lot of snow.
The entry fee is $20 per team and teams need to pre-register by calling the YMCA.
Participants can learn to ice skate at 10 a.m. Some skates will be available. Following that, learn how to ice fish at noon and, finally, try out snowshoeing at 2 p.m. Weather permitting, Avalanche Hill will be ready for sledding.
Sunday events begin at noon with an ice harvesting demonstration much like they used to do in days gone by. Also, learn about the birds that are in the area during the winter months.
The kids' snow box derby registration begins at noon and will get under way at 1 p.m. Children are encouraged to decorate a cardboard box and slide down Avalanche Hill.
Once again, learn about ice fishing at 1 p.m.
The popular Frozen Salami Sling takes place at 2 p.m. Contestants see how far they can throw a frozen salami.
At 2:30 p.m., try out a pair of snowshoes.
Then, at 3 p.m., wear your swimsuit and run in the "almost" naked mile. Hats and mittens are allowed.
Finally, the much-anticipated and final event of Winterfest will take place at 4 p.m.: The Polar Bear Swim. There is still time to register by calling the YMCA.
Both days a concession stand will be open and, depending on weather conditions, all activities scheduled will take place. Bring winter gear, sleds and skates to Parker Dam for the two-day event. Restroom facilities will be open.
