CASD's superintendent leaving
Monday, February 11, 2013
By Jeff Corcino Staff Writer
The Clearfield Area School District is again looking for another superintendent as Dr. Thomas Otto is leaving the district to accept the position of superintendent at the Altoona Area School District.
"On behalf of the Clearfield Area Board of School Directors - we were informed this weekend that Dr. Thomas Otto has accepted the Superintendent position with the Altoona (Area) School District starting on or about July 1, 2013. While we are disappointed that he chose not to complete his contract here, we respect his right to make this move, we thank him for his work in Clearfield and wish him well. The search will begin immediately for his replacement. The board will have further comment on this issue at our public hearing on Feb. 25, " Dave Glass, board president, wrote in an e-mail to The Progress.
Otto was hired as superintendent of the Clearfield Area School District December 2010. He signed a 4½-year contract, which was to run until June of 2015.
The board hired Otto after an extensive candidate search, which included allowing the public and district staff to meet and asked questions of the two finalists at a public meeting in September and school board members traveling to the candidates' school districts to interview their colleagues.
Otto lives in Altoona and will not only be working closer to home, he is also getting a substantial pay increase.
According to the Altoona Mirror, Otto will be paid a salary of $141,000; when he was hired at Clearfield he was given a salary of $116,000 with a 2.5-percent pay increase a year, which would put his salary at $121,872 for 2013.
Otto had succeeded interim Superintendent Dr. J. Thomas Frantz who was hired in June 2010. Frantz was hired on a temporary basis until the district could find a permanent replacement for Dr. Richard Makin who served as superintendent from January 2009 to July 2010 when he left to take the position of director of the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology.
Makin had replaced Dr. Denise Keltz who retired in August 2008 after serving four years as superintendent.
