4-H achievement awards given at banquet
Monday, February 18, 2013
By Dianne Byers Staff Writer
The 2012 accomplishments of Clearfield County's 4-H members were celebrated at yesterday's 4-H awards and achievement program held at Expo I at the Driving Park, Clearfield. This is the 27th year for the program.
Members of the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council served as masters of ceremonies for the event.
Jana Davidson, 4-H youth development educator for Penn State Extension, Clearfield County, also welcomed approximately 150 4-H members, their families and guests that included state Rep. Matt Gabler, D-75 of DuBois, who received the second Friends of 4-H award, and state Rep. Tommy Sankey, R-74 of Clearfield.
Davidson said the Friends of 4-H award is given annually to those who have provided continuous encouragement and backing to the Clearfield County 4-H program. "We wanted a way to recognize all the wonderful people who continually sponsor and promote the Clearfield County 4-H program."
Gabler said he was honored to receive the award. "I am a big fan of 4-H," he said noting he believes the program provides numerous opportunities for young people to learn leadership and respect.
New this year was the presentation of the inaugural Nancy L. "Lucy" Blakely memorial scholarship. Blakely was a long-time 4-H volunteer and trainer who died Jan. 14, 2012. Blakely helped numerous 4-H members with horse projects by building their self-confidence and equestrian skills according to several testimonies given yesterday. A scholarship for 4-H members was established in her memory using funds from the sale of a donated Palomino filly, Lucy's Golden Legacy, and various donations from individuals and 4-H horse clubs. The 2012 effort raised $1,600 that was donated equally among four 4-H members, Chelsea Folmar, Renegade Riders 4-H Club; Katelyn Matthews, Twisted Trails 4-H Club; Fran McAninch, Town and Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club; and Taylor Walborn, Town and Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club to defray their college expenses. Future donations to the scholarship fund will be used to sponsor classes at 4-H sponsored horse shows at the country, district and state levels.
Additionally, a new class to recognize superior grooming and showmanship skills was added to the 4-H county horse show in Blakely's memory. It was won by Ariel Hanst of Town and Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club.
Also recognized yesterday was Tractor Supply, Clearfield and DuBois locations, for their support of the Clearfield County 4-H program through a national program, 4-H Paper Clovers Campaign that asks customers to purchase a paper clover for a $1 donation. James Doyle, manager of the DuBois store said a majority of the funds stay with the local programs. The 2012 spring and fall campaigns at both locations netted more than $2,000.
