CLARION - Curwensville's Jake Lancaster finished third at 138 pounds in last year's District 9 Class AAA Tournament and qualified for regionals, wrestling for Clearfield.
A year later, Lancaster was competing for a different school at a different weight class in a different classification.
A D-9 Class AA title at 126 pounds as he led the Tide to a 10-place finish Saturday at Clarion University's Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.
"It feels pretty good, coming down from Triple-A to Double-A and winning," Lancaster said. "I feel pretty good right now.
The second-seeded Lancaster held off the fourth-seed, Redbank Valley's Mitch Blose - whom he had pinned twice during the season - 4-3, to pick up Curwensville's lone championship on the day.
"He wrestled with determination this weekend," Curwensville head coach Duane Wriglesworth said. "He set his mind to one goal and was driven to accomplish it, no matter what it took. Jake is scrappy and never gives up. He sets high goals for himself and works hard. It's no surprise he accomplished what he did."
Lancaster pinned third seed Jack Glasl of Brockway in 2:38 in the semifinals after disposing of Cameron County's Paul Etchepare, 12-6, in Friday afternoon's quarterfinal round.
"We were impressed with his flexibility and ability to scramble in and out of mat situations," Wriglesworth said of Lancaster. "His mat awareness enabled him to turn a defensive struggle into a scoring opportunity. Jake gets good hand control most of the time and with his constant motion is usually tough to hold down."
Lancaster looked like he was going to pin Blose again after giving up a takedown and reversing him to his back early in the first period.
But Blose rolled through before a 2-count was made and was able to fight off Lancaster's pinning combinations the rest of the period.
Blose rode Lancaster the entire third period, trying everything to turn him, but simply couldn't get the Tide sophomore to his back.
"He gave me a tough fight," Lancaster said of Blose. "Scoring early on and then battling out (was the key)."
"We were initially concerned when Blose "threw-by" Jake's double-leg attempt for a quick takedown," Wriglesworth said. "Jake did a nice job of reversing Blouse with a knee spin switch.
"The key to Jake taking the lead was his barrel roll dump takedown he hit when Blose tried to do a behind spin, something we had worked on in practice. This was huge because Jake had difficulty getting off the bottom in the third."
Lancaster scored quick falls against Blose in two previous meetings.
"Blose found a way to keep Jake down with his relentless cross-face cradle attempts from the base position," Wriglesworth said.
"Jake may have not been ready for this attack because we didn't see this from him in previous matches. Mitch never really had a chance to be on top of us before because Jake shot in with a double-leg and converted right to a near cradle for a first period fall."
The 126-pound weight class was the only one that didn't have the top seed in the finals. Brookville's Cole Clever was seeded first, but was upended by Clarion's Riley Gunter, 3-2, in the quarterfinals and then eliminated from the tourney altogether by Glasl, 5-4.
Blose pinned Gunter to get to the finals against Lancaster.
"I was a little worried about Cole Clever because he beat me in the regular season," Lancaster said. "But when he got knocked out, I felt pretty good."
Joining Lancaster on the medal stand were Tide 106-pounder Sam Bressler and 145-pounder Trey McKenzie, who placed third and fourth, respectively, at their weight classes.
Bressler lost by 15-3 major decision to eventual champ Taylor Ortz of Brookville, but came back with two wins in the consolation bracket, including a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brockway's Ryan Carlson in the third-place bout.
Bressler scored the winning takedown with less than five seconds left in the bout.
Bressler, who was 3-1 in the tourney, pinned Sheffield's Tanner Barr in the consey semis.
"Sam Bressler showed poise in his final match against Carlson," Wriglesworth said. "He was seeded over Sam, so we knew this would be a close match. When you're tied 0-0 going into the third period, that is close. Sam didn't panic when Carlson escaped with about 1: 00 left in the period.
"Coaches (Steve) Keller and (Mike) Bookhamer have worked a lot with Sam on his feet lately, especially with double-leg set-ups. Sam's deep double-leg shot and lift was perfect.
"he only trouble Sam had was finishing the shot when Carlson tried to attempt a back hanging funk roll. Sam went to his hip and secured the takedown by stepping over both his opponents' legs, giving him the win. We were very pleased with Sam's performance and can't wait to tweak some things this week to help him get ready for regionals."
McKenzie couldn't seem to break through against Ridgway's Zac McKnight, who handed the Tide junior both his losses by identical, 3-1, scores. The last came in the 145-pound consolation final.
"Trey McKenzie battled back in the consolation bracket after a loss to McKnight in the quarters only to face him again in the consolation finals," Wriglesworth said. "Trey also placed over his seed."
McKenzie was 4-2 in the tournament, picking up three pins and a decision. He topped third-seeded Port Allegany's Mac Tanner, 4-1 in the consey semis to punch his ticket to regionals. That bout turned quite physical, and Tanner was called for slamming McKenzie late in the third.
But McKenzie recovered and won the bout on the mat.
"Trey's finish with Mac Tanner turned into a backyard brawl," Wriglesworth said. "He was knocked a little dazed and could have stayed down and used up all his recovery time to win the match, but he wanted to finish in regulation time with about 30 seconds left. He made the remark to me when I went out to see if he is ok, ‘Coach, I am not staying down, I am fine and I am finishing this thing'.
"That is the kind of kid McKenzie is. Needless to say Tanner came after him with everything he had. Trey welcomed the challenge and stood his defensive ground on his feet, and even took an offensive shot at Tanner.
"At one point it almost looked like a boxing match out there. Trey is a brawler and I like that. It is too bad he didn't get past, it seems, his nemesis McKnight. We keep losing close matches by one takedown in the third period. If Trey wouldn't have got extended on his feet on one occasion, I feel we could have beaten him."
Curwensville 120-pounder Tyler Mays nearly made it a quartet heading to Sharon for the Northwest AA Tournament, but he dropped a tough, 2-0, bout to Cameron County's Brandon Saline in the consey semifinals and was eliminated one win short for the second year in a row.
"We knew it was going to be a close match," Wriglesworth said. "He just made a couple little mistakes. Tyler is a fighter. We have him another year, and he'll be back."
Mays was 2-2 in the tournament.
Also getting knocked from the tourney on Saturday were Greg Koptchak (113), Ricky Magnuson (220) and A.J. Bloom (285). All three fell in the consey quarterfinals.
"Overall, we feel we wrestled a good tournament," Wriglesworth said. "Sending three to regionals hasn't been done in years, especially with several team members out with injuries. This is a credit to the hard work and determination these guys are doing and displaying."
Redbank Valley edged Brookville for the team title, 177.5 to 170.5.
Brookville had three champs (Ortz, Brock Zacherl at 138 and Zach Vroman at 145). Redbank crowned two champs (Aaron Hook at 182 and Cal Haines at 220).
Kane's Cody Blankenship (113) and Evan Delong (160), Smethport's Trent Neely (120) and Karl Lightner (132), Coudersport's Kyle Bova (152), Brockway's Anthony Benson (170), Oswayo Valley's Jake Wichert (195) and Port Allegany's Nick Budd (285) were the other champs.
Benson was named Outstanding Wrestler after beating Port's Alex Gular in the finals. Gular was gunning for his fourth district title.
