Military families invited to state parks, forests in April
Monday, April 1, 2013
HARRISBURG - The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Richard Allan invited military families with children to take advantage of free activities in state parks and forests during April, "The Month of the Military Child."
In 1986, the secretary of defense designated each April as "The Month of the Military Child" to recognize the contribution a child makes as their parents serve the nation.
"DCNR works every day to encourage our citizens to take time to explore and be active outdoors, which is important for kids who spend more and more time with electronic entertainment," Allan said. "We'd especially like to connect military children with the outdoors since their parents have served to protect the lands and opportunities available for them to enjoy."
Some of the free programs available to families at state parks in April include Seasonal Pool Exploration, Black Moshannon, April 6 at 10 a.m., Birds and Blooms Hike, Keystone, April 6 at 2 p.m., Signs of Spring Hike, Promised Land, April 12 at 1 p.m., Experiencing a Spring Night Hike, Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, April 12 at 8 p.m., Fossil Hunting, Bald Eagle, April 13 at 2 p.m., DiscoverE Day Sampler, Ricketts Glen, April 19 at 10 a.m., annual Kid's Fishing Derby, Parker Dam, April 21 at 9 a.m., Exploring an Ancient Forest, Ricketts Glen, April 24 at 5:30 p.m., Early Spring Wild-flower Walk, Promised Land, April 25 at 5 p.m., Dusk Hike, Promised Land State Park, April 26 at 7 p.m., Geocache Walk, Nockamixon, April 27 at 2 p.m., Night Sky Tour, Cherry Springs, April 27 at 9 p.m.
